Assurity Life Insurance Company Reviews

  • May 13, 2014

My husband and I paid a small monthly premium for years for a disability policy with this company. The benefit was $500/month for a maximum of 5 years, not a lot of money, but helpful for a person who isn't able to work. The premium was drafted from our checking account automatically, and I actually sort of forgot about it. Then, after working for 41 years at his own occupation (self employed, hard labor as a blacksmith/horseshoer), my husband developed serious degenerative joint disease, severe back/hip pain, and by the end of 2012, was unable even to walk without grimacing, let alone hold up a 1200 lb. horse and beat out shoes on an anvil. We tried everything to get him some relief and to enable him to work, PT, medication, cortisone injections...by the end of last year, he was unable to walk, to sleep, even to sit without pain. Finally he had a total hip replacement in February and now is looking at the probability of back surgery. Obviously he hasn't been able to work for quite a long time. We have gone through our savings and had to mortgage our home of 36 years.

I am supporting my family alone now, and we are applying for SSDI. Last January I realized we had the Assurity policy and we filed a claim dating back to October, 2012. it was quite involved, but we submitted everything they asked for, statements from his doctors, and so on. I knew we were in trouble when they kept saying they hadn't received our paperwork, day after day, week after week. I eventually ended up filing it 3 times.

After 8 weeks they eventually paid us 2 payments of $500 each, did not say what months they were paying for, and included paperwork for us to complete for continued payment. Nothing about the 2 years prior to his surgery. We have called and written, and they simply will not address the claim. They won't tell us what, if anything, they still require to document this claim, won't tell us anything at all.I'm going to end up hiring an attorney and probably paying him/her most of what the claim is worth.

I think it's really shameful that this company took our money all these years and now will not honor this claim. I think it's shameful that they won't even talk to us about it, that they've chosen to just ignore us in the hope we will go away.I think it's really sad that they do business this way and that a man who worked really hard for so many years now has to fight with these stupid people to get what we paid for. if you're looking for disability insurance, look elsewhere.
