We are a U.S.expatriate family so we have been using AVIS for years in the UK and US.
Over our families SPring Break we rented from AVIS at Frankfurt Airport. We drove to Saas-Fee and parked the vehicle in the garage for the week since it is a carless village. We then drove it back to the airport and parked it. The man working at the AVIS desk in the garage waved us off without checking the car.
We however had looked over the vehicle and it was in perfect condition. Later we were charge 1500 Euros for imaginary damage that absolutely wasn't there. We now realize looking back it was a scam because they purposely waved us away without inspection. AVIS says we can get a lawyer!!

I will be posting on all travel sites and blogs to let everyone know that AVIS has an office that will scam families and take money from hard working teachers and government servants.
Our girls were in Hawaii at a wedding when their purses were stolen with everything including their rental car key from Avis. Avis not only told them that they did not have an extra key to the car they rented, but they would be charged for not lnly replacing the key, but all the locks on the car. They also had to have the car towed to the nearest Avis location and then they were charged with returning it to the wrong location.
I refuse to believe that Avis only has one key to each car in their lot. I also refuse to believe that they replaced all the locks on that car. Sham on you Avis for taking advantage of your customer, especially in a dificult situation!
A week after we thought was our closed-out and _inspected_ handing in our rental (in which NO damage whatsoever was noted) to Budget / Avis at the Laredo Airport offsite location, we received a $4000+ "damage claim" from AVIS for suppossedly visible colision damage to the driver's side.
While we strongly dispute this "damage" as having occured while in our pocession, the rougly $1K "loss of use" and "administrative" fees were (of course) not covered by our credit card rental car coverage - this would come out of our pockets. It would have been far more than $1K to contest this in a court of law, especially since we are from our-of-town and this would have been contested in either Laredo or Corpus Christi.
I wonder how many others have been similarly scammed with these shady business practices ?
Moral of the story: Avoid Budget aka AVIS Rent A Car at the Laredo International Airport like the plague !
