Within the last month, I recieved a brand-new credit card. The first time I ever used it was a few days ago, ordering food through Entrees Denton. Then, late last night, an unauthorized charge for $100 showed up on my card. Since I never used the card anywhere else, it absolutely must have been compromised by Entrees Denton, their online security system, or the restaurant through which the meal was ordered (Andaman Thai Restaurant).
I left a message on their automatic voice mail system, but have had no reply as of this posting. I can only assume that they are investigating the matter, as their very existence as an online business is entirely dependent upon consumer confidence (my personal confidence is understandably hindered at this time).
The service I recieved from Entrees Denton was good, although it would have been nice to have had some indication of when we might expect delivery. The food quality from Andaman was also good. My only notable problem was with the secure handling of my credit card in the process of the order.
Since the card was new, and was never used anywhere else, then it seems logical to conclude that the security vulnerability lies with Entrees Denton, downline from them in their system, with the restaurant they dealt with (Andaman), or with employees of either one. Since Entrees Denton was the entity to which I furnished my credit card information, it becomes Entrees Denton's responsibility for any breaches in security which may have occurred thereafter.
My warning to customers is to be careful about credit card security when dealing with them. Although it might better suit the needs of some people to use reloadable or disposable prepaid debit cards, I intend to make any future orders on a cash basis.
