Ethical Electric sells their scam by quoting all wind and solar power for aproximately the same price as ""dirty"" electricity. After 3 months they charge very high, about double normal, rates. No disclosure is available on their current rates. Customers trying to do the right thing and believing false advertising, sigh on with a contract which allows Ethical to raise prices to an undisclosed amount after 3 months. Ethical advertises that their energy costs almost the same as regular sources. Mine started at 11 cents per kilowatt hour and was raised to 20 cents per kilowatt hour after 3 months. BG&E, my regular supplier charges about 10 cents.

Tom Matzzie is their founder and uses his reputation with moveon.org to gain confidence of customers.

If customers don't catch it - and most don't, they pay into a highly profitable scam.

In my case they paid back excess charges only after I complained to the BBB. The BBB dismissed my complaint because they figure I was paid back. They are allowing thousands more to be scammed.

They Are Now Using Daily Kos

Apparently, "Ethical" Electric has moved on from moveon.org. I just received the same scam offer from Daily Kos.

OBSCENE BILLS

My electric bill has been over $500 for the past 3 months! I live alone and keep the heat at 60. I cancelled and received my latest bill for $575! I live on social security and don't understand how they can expect people to pay this. The wording on the "contract" I received led me to believe that I was doing my civic duty! I have complained to the BBB and the Pa. Utilities Commission.

OBSCENE BILLS

I just cancelled after receiving my third bill for over $575! I live alone and keep my heat at 60. I have NEVER had bills like this. I live on social security and can't understand how they think people can pay this. I have complained to the BBB. The letter they sent me was very misleading.

They charge double what they claim!

After them reeling me in by telling me their rates are the same as my electric company, but it's clean energy I got my first bill. They didn't wait 3 months to rip me off! Double what the electric company charges! My bill normally runs about $225/m, went up to $499.12, the highest by far it's ever been. I cancelled immediately, but they seemed to have no shame about straight up lying to me.

Ethical Electric is ripping off NJ, PA residential electricity consumers. Myself as an example: My electricty company is Jersey Central Power & Light. They charge me 0.103 per KWH. Ethical Electric charged me 0.21 per KWH. which is twice much as JCPL charged. Anyone use Ethical Electric should be terminate their service immediatly. They tricked consumer to their program then charge high rate to you. Unfortunatly, they covered their legal ground(they are legally to do so because deregulation). Also, by law, JCPL couldn't tell you that you are being ripped off because law forbiddent to do so. So, get ridoff Ethical Electric

Scam in Pittsburgh Power Grid

I too thought I was doing the proper civic thing by signing on to Ethical energy. But our monthly bills have continued to be grossly exaggerated over previous years and was glad to be relieved of Ethical as my source of power and return to Duquesne Light Co.

What can unhappy and disgruntled customers such as us do to regain the shameful differential in monthly bills that we have been paying for almost two years?

Part of my electricity started to be supplied by Ethical Electric back in September of 2014 because I checked some box in a postcard, signed that postcard and mailed it back. I now realized that I was tricked into thinking that my electricity would be coming from environmentally-friendly sources at the same rate as Pepco provides. Now I am stuck with huge electricity bills. There was no disclosure of variable rate or a locked-in rate if you sign up for one-year contract. I had no idea that there was such thing as a variable rate, which doubles the initial rate per kwh, until today after calling the company. My electricity bill is usually around $60 when I was with Pepco exclusively. In December 2014, after the 3rd month with Ethical Electric, my bill went up to $152. I paid the last month's bill thinking that maybe I need to use less electricity. Then for this month (Jan. 2015) bill, it went up to $205. The ridiculous part of it is that I was not even home for 10 days because I was out of town for the Christmas holidays from Dec. 24 to Jan. 2 and I had turned off and unplugged all my appliances and heater before leaving. However, the bill was even more than the previous month's. The rate went from $0.085 with Pepco to $0.12999 with Ethical Electric in November then to $0.144. I was appalled. When I spoke with a customer service representative this afternoon (2/10/15 around 3:45 pm), the lady told me that the rate increase is due to the variable energy rate and she cannot do anything about my bills. I had never heard of it until now and Ethical Electric used an unethical practice in which the "variable rate" is not disclosed or it is hidden fine prints. Ethical Electric abuses the fact that most customers will not check the fine prints (if existed) in the midst of being environmentally friendly. I found out that Ethical Electric's fraudulent billing practices are common after reading numerous BBB reports here and doing some Google search. I became another victim of their fraudulent practice.

Don't Fall For Ethical Electric

I cancelled my service as soon as a saw my rates are variable after the first month. I know its clean energy, but that is ridiculous. I thought it was ETHICAL electric! They claim your rate will be the same, but what they don't say is that it is only for one month, then the rate grows higher and higher.

Fraudulent promises

I too chose to switch for "free". I asked up front about the cost, as I was unwilling to pay more for the same thing...electricity. I was promised that my rate would be the SAME or LOWER as PP&L for one year. They called me again to "switch". I told them I already did. Apparently they locked me into a fixed rate (higher than PP&L). I never agreed to the higher rate. I called today to cancel, as they were unwilling to give a credit. It is so unfair that they quote you a comparable price for one year, raise it, and then there is nothing you can do about it -- except cancel and switch back. I should have known to leave well enough alone. All the switching does is cause stress. Sure, you might save $ initially, but it ends up costing you more. You are better off leaving things be. I cancelled and promised to slam on social media - they still did not budge on a credit!

Brutal rates

I'm with PSE&G, with EE as a third party. My bill sums the PSE&G rate AND the EE rate (which is twice as much as the PSE&G rate). I'm not being double-billed--I'm being triple-billed.
