Frigidaire Reviews

  • Sep 3, 2014

We purchased a high end Frigidaire French door refrigerator from Home Depot in June of 2013. The unit was on back order at the time of purchase (more on that in a bit).

Once we received the unit in late June, we noticed that the temperature didn't seem consistent with prior refrigerators, or the 25 year old Montgomery Ward fridge that I keep my beer in. We just sucked it up because the electronic temperature setting was at 33F and we really didn't have a reason to question it as the unit did keep food reasonably cool. Fast forward to early June 2014 - the refrigerator started to move more in the warm direction so we placed a thermometer in the unit which indicated a temperature of ~50F - obviously in the danger zone.

I contacted Frigidaire and was first told that regardless of when we received the unit, the warrantee started on the sale date (I'm pretty sure this is illegal, but haven't figured out whether to sue or not yet). After a lot of arm twisting, they agreed that they would generously cover this repair under the warrantee, even though they never admitted that it was countertuitive that a warrantee should start before a product was even produced.

Then the fun begins: They designated a service repair company that came out and worked on the unit for half a day treating what were potential, but undiagnosed, causes for the failure. He indicated that he wasn't happy that the unit was "repaired" but suggested that we wait through the weekend to see what would happen. The refrigerator went to 35F for two days and then returned to above 50F. The service repairman returned after waiting for a couple of weeks on parts, and replaced a board that controls the electronics and some other componentry related to the defrosting of the unit.

Still no success - after contacting Frigidaire/Electrolux and demanding that they replace the unit, I was told that they would have to have a second technician diagnose what the problem was before they could take any other action. In late July, a technician came to the house with a thermocouple which he was sure would fix the problem, even though he had never diagnosed what was wrong. The thermocouple fix didn't work, so he indicated that he would replace "everything that could possibly be wrong with the unit". We waited for a month for the parts to come in, which on installation did still not bring the temperature of the refrigerator below 40F.

I'm convinced that the unit was never cooling properly from the date of delivery, and after three months of having a parade of service people in our house interspersed with long delays for parts, still don't have a resolution.

Next step is Small Claims Court as I am convinced that either Frigidaire has really poor design control, really poor manufacturing control, or a really poor service network.
