A few years ago I was coerced into buying a 4 day vacation package by a high pressure salesman. After careful thought, I decided I didn’t want to the package and called the next day to let them know. I was told that I had already made a commitment to purchase and was obligated to pay. I told them that any money I had already paid they could keep, but to cancel my vacation commitment. They assured me they would do so.
I’ve received several phone calls from them saying I had purchased a resort package and I explained that I had cancelled it and would they please note that and not call again. Needless to say, every few months I receive a phone call from them about the “cancelled” vacation package.
Today I received a call from Global Fulfillment Services about the vacation packaged and I again explained that I had cancelled it a few years ago and that I didn’t want it. I was transferred to a Jonathan Fitzpatrick. Although I have no complaint regarding his manner, he was insistent that if I did not pay the rest of the package I purchased, that it would be turned over to a collection agency and I would have to pay around $3,000US dollars. He said I actually owed $457, but if I paid today, that he would still offer me the 4 day vacation package (even though I don’t want it) and he would reduce the money I owed to $298US. He assured me that I wouldn’t receive any more phone calls and that my file would be closed if I paid the money today.
Much as I didn’t want to, I gave GFS my credit card information. They also told me if I cancelled the Visa payment that I would be charged a 20% restocking fee???
As I’m Canadian, I’m not too sure about cancellation policies in the US. In Canada we are given a 48 hour grace period after a commitment and at that time the contract can be cancelled.
I'm very disappointed in myself as well as this GFS who emply high pressure salesmen to talk people into buying something they don't want.
Your assistance in this matter would be appreciated.
