I received a Foreclosure prevention notice in the mail and called the number listed. The notice had HUD approved and Making Homes Affordable logos on it, as well as Department of the Treasury seal. I called the number and spoke to a VERY knowledgeable man on the phone who claimed that my lender had committed "Dual Tracking" against me and that I would possibly be eligible for a loan modification through one of the programs offered by HUD.
They faxed me the paperwork that had all the Making Homes Affordable logos on it, and I know know that it was actually downloaded from the website of Making Homes Affordable. Any individual can download these forms and it does NOT make them legitimate.
I sent the forms back after filling them out to the individual whose name was Alex Lee. He kept me informed on a daily basis and said that I would most likely need to pay a "reinstatement fee" to my lender to show them that I was serious about modifying my loan and that I could make the payments on my mortgage after falling behind.
I was "approved" and sent a cashiers check for $5,300 to an address in California that was supposedly the "processing center." I was told NOT to communicate with my lender because that would only "confuse" the modification of the loan and that my lender would try to confuse ME because they wanted to foreclose on my home.
After several weeks I hadn't received any follow up communication and was concerned since I had to make 3 payments of $993, which would complete the loan modification. I was told the ONLY thing that could "mess up" the loan modification would be to miss one of these payment and/or not make them on time.
I received a strange email with no return address that was a form I was supposed to download and print off as a "payment coupon." That seemed bizarre and I began to do some investigating and questioning of the HOPE Retention Center. I asked some pretty bold questions and told the man there who was the "Senior Processor" that I was having second thoughts about this entire process. I also let him know that my Father was a Los Angeles Superior Court Judge.
His entire attitude changed. He told me I was going to "mess things up" and my loan wouldn't go through if I involved anyone else because I had actually spoken to my lender, who was Chase. The representative at Chase said the forms I received should've had Chase's logo on them if they were actually legitimate.
I spent over 30 hours trying to report the Hope Retention Center and finally reported the to the Hope Scam Hotline. I was SCAMMED. These people will take your money and be VERY convincing that they are helping you. They will tell you NOT to communicate with your lender, and are educated on how loan modifications work. They spoke to a representative at Chase and even fooled them for a brief time.
Make SURE that if you're seeking a legitimate loan modification that you are working with one of the 6 HUD approved agencies. There are only 6 LEGITIMATE agencies and you can be directed to one of them by calling the HOPE Hotline at 888-995-4673. DO NOT trust any notices you receive in the mail and know that it is illegal for any company to charge any kind of a FEE for a loan modification. Communicate with your lender!!!
