Fraud - Solar Panel Scam Posted on Friday May 02, 2014 Subscribe via RSS Subscribe via e-mail The Niagara Regional Police Central Fraud Unit is currently investigating frauds involving the set-up and installation of solar panels. On April 15, 2014 Kenneth McGrath was arrested in the Town of Grimsby and has been charged with Fraud over $5,000 after he received in excess of $55,000 from a Welland resident between March 1, 2010 and March 1, 2012. 54 year old Kenneth McGrath of no fixed address has been soliciting customers over the past several years exploiting the Ontario Power Authority's Micro-FIT program. The program, designed specifically to encourage the development of micro scale renewable energy, promotes the use of small scale solar panel systems to generate hydro to be added to the grid for profit by the system owner. McGrath promoted the use of solar panels and would solicit interested parties to provide ongoing payments for projects that never truly existed and that were never built.McGrath has been operating under the business names; Neighbourhood Group Inc. Neighbourhood Financial Group Neighbourhood Energy Systems. McGrath He is currently under investigation for similar frauds in Niagara and the London Ontario area and Police believe that there could be other victims that have yet to come forward. In the past he has identified himself to victims as being from the Essex and Woodstock area. McGrath was held pending a bail hearing. His next court appearance is scheduled for May 05, 2014 in a St Catharines Bail Court.
