Mizu Hair Salon Reviews

  • Jul 24, 2014

I am disgusted at how unprofessional the salon owner, Carla Yamanaka at Mizu Salon in Half Moon Bay, handles herself and the lack of competency from her staff. I would NEVER recommend going there, ESPECIALLY if you are a blonde.

After requesting they use the same formula as my former Aveda salon where I went for years and providing them with the name of my colorist and the salon contact number, the colorist at Mizu gave me highlights and a 'bump,' the latter of which caused my scalp to burn so the colorist at Mizu had to wash it out. Unfortunately, the color from my highlights never took but I was, unfortunately, left with a brassy halo near my crown. Her fix after consulting with another colorist on staff was to put a semi permanent on top of the halo. She started that process and washed me out at which time she had another appointment so she was unable to fix the rest of my hair or finish blow drying me out. The salon owner, Carla Yamanaka, who was out of town until Tuesday was notified of the situation and requested I come in to see her specifically upon her return on Tuesday.

On Wednesday I went in to see Carla. It was a 40 min drive from where I am staying which I expressed to Carla upon making the appointment with her. The first thing she said after I sat down was that she said she stood by her stylist and that it was not their fault but she wants to fix my hair. I was baffled because it was their fault, I gave them who to talk to and the number to call and they decided to act otherwise. Regardless, she said she wanted to fix my hair but unfortunately there was no was no way for it to go back to 'normal' because it was no longer virgin hair where the halo was. The best she could do would be to put highlights over it all and then she tried to up-sell me on products that would stop the halo from turning brassy in a few weeks.

After this transpired, before she could start on my hair, she wanted me to sign an agreement saying I would not file a lawsuit against her because there may be additional damage to my hair after she's done with it. I've never heard of such a requirement by a salon nor was I given one by the lady that messed up my hair that worked at her salon in the first place. My argument was that if she wanted me to sign such a document she should have said something prior to me making the 40 min drive. She said she was unaware how bad my hair was and having known that prior to my arrival, she would have alerted me. I told her that two of her colorists, one of which was in that day, was aware of how my hair looked as they consulted with each other the last time I was in as to how to fix it.

Upon my refusal for signing such an absurd document due to fear she was going to further ruin my hair and only wanted protection and written permission to do so, she starter verbally abusing me in front of her employees and yelling at me to leave because 'I was on drugs.' I would like to note, I have never done a drug in my life and it was 11am in the afternoon. I have never been so degraded. Carla Yamanaka flipped a switch like she, herself, was on drugs. She, herself, should be fired but alas she is the salon owner.

An owner, no matter what kind of business, should take responsibility for the actions of their team they hired and own self. The treatment and service I received was not only unprofessional, abusive, disastrous and extremely unnecessary, but could have been completely avoided. Although her treatment and service were beyond horrific, I am not going to file a lawsuit in this situation, it's hair... it will grow back... but I hope no one else has to go through what I went through.
