Payless Car Rental Reviews

  • Jun 15, 2015

It took over 45 minutes for me to even talk to a customer service rep, and there were only 2 other people in front of me. Once I did, they forced me to purchase rental insurance. I stated that I did not want rental insurance, and the incompetent employee behind the counter said that it was not optional and that I had to choose one of their options. I argued with her briefly and decided to take it up with their customer service department later. They didn't even have the car that I had reserved online, through their own website, so I was given a cheap malibu.

I later talked to their "Customer Service" department asking why I had to purchase rental insurance, since I had never been forced to do that before. They informed me that it was in fact optional and that I could have declined the insurance. I explained to them that I had declined and that it was forced upon me. They informed me that they would be unable to help me in any way and became rather condescending and belligerent through their messages.

Payless Car Rental Confirmation number 14837248

I had a contract to pick up a compact car in Tampa for approx 2 days beginning March 19th, 2015.

Payless is an off airport site that provides a shuttle service from the airport to their office. The wait for the shuttle was at least 25 minutes and as we waited we watched other rental companys pass by several times.

Our rental agreement provided through "SmartFares" was for 25.02 per day + taxes and fees, and was estimated total of $71.00 for a two day rental. Once we finally reached the Payless rental office they had about 10 or 11 clients waiting in line and only ONE attendant. Finally, two additional attendants arrived and about one hour later it was our turn.

While waiting we observed them rent out several cars the size and style we were contracted to rent. The attendant advised that they did not have the car we were contracted for and "we" would need to upgrade at our additional expense. I had heard of companies upgrading at their expense, but insistant that I the consumer pay for their inventory oversite. So the bottom line was supposed to be an estimated maximum of $97.00. The contract form calls for a 5:pm return.

Imagine how shocked I was to learn I owed them $145.49 since I returned the car at 3:07pm instead of the 5pm later time. I am now advised that since I picked up the car @ 11:37am and didn't return it until 3:07 I was being billed for an additional 24 hours. However even those numbers do not compute in my book.

We felt Payless had us over a barrell on both ends of this transaction. Being off site one can't just walk over to another desk and checkout the competition. So, we felt no option to accept the upgrade as they were not certain when the car we ordered would be avaiable. On the return side we had a departing plane to catch and it appeared that we were not going to obatin restitution anyway as it is "just tuff" and this is the way it is.

I fully intend to advertise my shoddy treatement and the PAYLESS financial scam to everyone I possibly can unless restitution is made immediatley to my account. Customer Invoice TPA-147863

I received a price from Hotwire for Payless Car Rental for around $121. When we arrived at the Payless Car Rental facility, I had about 6 to 8 people behind me with only one agent. I showed him the Hotwire paperwork and he immediately started trying to hard sell me on getting additional insurance but I told him that my insurance would cover the rental but he kept on going about that it wouldn't cover this and that, windows, etc. minor damage, etc. After 4 times of saying no, he finally said OK and that he could put me in a Chrysler 200 convertible. Wow, I told him that would be great. He never once mentioned ANYTHING about additional charges or upgrade or anything to indicate this would cost me more money. In fact the customer in front of me was upgrade (for free) to a VW Jetta so I didn't think anything of it. He then told me they would have to hold $280 or so until I brought the car back but it would be refunded to me. I thought that was pretty high but I had people waiting behind me and appointment to make.

I would say about 4 days later I remembered this and looked at my paperwork. It showed that the agent had charged me an upgrade cost of $25 a day for the Chrysler for $125.00 extra. I put in a complaint to Payless Car Rental through their web site but as of this complaint I still haven't heard a word from them. When I brought the car back, the agent I worked with was working so I went to him and explained my issue with being charged $125 extra for this upgrade which he NEVER mention any additional costs at all. I told him that if he had mentioned any type of charge in association with the Chrysler, I would said no way. His response was that I should have known better. He said that he had circled the total cost and that I had signed the form showing the cost. I told him that I thought that was to deposit that he told me about and why hadn't he circled the upgrade cost of the Chrysler since he was being so upfront, he had no answer. He told me he would give me $60 back but I told him no since I shouldn't have been charged the $125 in the first place. He never once disclosed that he was charging me more for the Chrysler. The whole process seemed very under handed and high pressured. Not to mention that you are charging someone an additional $125 a week is dishonest. DO NOT RENT FROM THEM.

At pickup, I explained that I would be bringing the car back the next day, but I needed to keep it a couple hours later in the day than when I picked it up. They said that was fine and they quoted me a price of $35. When I returned the car, they said I had to pay for an extra day. With taxes and fees, the cost came to $110. There was someone else in line next to me who had the same problem.

There was some very minor damage to the rear bumper, barely even a scratch, and I had purchased the optional collision insurance. They still charged me $750 for the damage and said I had to file a claim against the insurance on my own. (So basically, I have to do their jobs for them.)

They say the shuttle to the airport runs every ten minutes, but I waited for it for about a half hour during both the pickup and return.

This Payless agency uses a deceptive and false sales pitch regarding their pre‐paid fuel charges.

The only possible way to get the per‐gallon cost quoted by the agent is to return the vehicle with no fuel remaining, and this would require pushing or towing the vehicle to the return location.

I rented a car from this agency on 06/21/14,and the sales agent explicitly stated that I would be charged $3.19 per gallon for fuel if I pre‐paid for the fuel, and advised me that the average local fuel cost was "about $3.51 per gallon. I returned the vehicle on 06/25/14, and the fuel gage indicated 5/8 full, yet Payless charged me for the refill of a complete tank of fuel.

I challenged this charge with both the on‐duty agent and manager, and was told that my only recourse was a refund of the prepaid fuel charge, and then pay $8.99 per gallon to fill the returned vehicles tank, 253% of the average local per gallon cost.

I TRY TO BE SHORT AND SWEET WITH COPY AND PASTING THE EXACT COMMUNICATION BETWEEN ME AND THEIR CUSTOMER CARE.. AFTER THEY CHARGED MY CREDIT CARD TWICE

They overcharged for insurance that was needed. Did not credit gas that was left in tank and charged a toll fee 2 monthes later

1. On January 11th I arrived at Payless car rental. I got greeted by the Manager Hussien?? he was very rude. He stated that I had to have the insurance that payless provides or I could not take the car. Which was a lie. I want a refund on this. I had coverage on my own personal insurance.

2. He gave me an option not to fill up gas and they do it when I brought car back for return. At that point they would only charge what was used and a refund would be submitted. This never happened. I called several times and was left on hold.

3. 3/31/14 - I received a charge on my debit card or $15.75. When I called this 3rd party toll place. They stated I went through a toll. Which is a lie. They said they have it photographed. I asked for copy and they would not provide.
