Renter's Paradise Realty Reviews

  • May 5, 2014

I went to Renter's Paradise because I recently graduated from college, my parent's house was sold about 4 months back and I pretty much no longer had a permanent address. I recently got a job and all the properties listed on craigslist in my budget had phone numbers which lead to Renter's Paradise. Wilfredo R. showed me only 2 properties that were available(despite the many I saw online) , the first was a complete dump and the second was next to a construction site but was renovated. Long story short I decided to take the second because I was desperate and I would rather deal with construction noise than roaches with superpowers. I left a deposit to hold the apartment.I paid the full amount and signed an agreement to pay the full non negotiated rent with first month upfront. I tried to pay with a check but Wilfredo told me a check would take a few days to clear and someone else could take the apartment. I signed a receipt for the security deposit and he assured me everything would be fine and I just had to come in the next day for an interview with "the landlord."I was beyond excited and even went as far as making a facebook announcement for a housewarming get together. I arrived for an interview the next day completely oblivious to the hell that awaited me. Wilfredo tried to get me to pay more money stating someone else with similar qualifications would give " the landlord" more money on the apartment I already had on hold. I didn't understand why he was wheedling me for more money when he supposedly already had someone just like me willing to pay. So after the light dimmed in my eyes, I told him just couldn't afford more money and as he had no apartment to give me he should refund my money. Wilfredo then told me that not only was he leaving me homelesshe was also charging a $100 application fee (to sIeep on a bus bench I guess). I didn't even pay an application fee, the receipt clearly shows a deposit to hold an apartment. I called the bank and they asked that I provide proof that I didn't get services. I told the bank it was a bad idea to ask a thief to provide proof that they stole from you but nonetheless I called Renter's Paradise for some sort of documentation stating that they cancelled the contract. I went to the office where Wilfredo stated I had to go in on Monday Wilfredo answered and handed the phone to the office manager who scathingly told me he wouldn't gice me anything and "so you shot yourself in the foot... you thought you were clever contacting your bank" like some sort of cartoon movie villain. In hindsight and talking to my brother who also had bad dealings with Renter's Paradise around the same time i realized "the landlord" or property manager was watching me the whole time as i was swiping my card. I believe he is the person/office manager at Renter's Paradise. The bank is still pursuing the claim but the money is not the issue. It cannot recover the night I spent crying because I thought I wouldn't find a place to live or the humiliation of driving to a new job with my possessions spilling out of the car windows or the invitation to a house party that never happened.
