Smart Payment Plan Reviews

Not what I thought

I was given the option at the dealership to set up payments for my vehicle on a biweekly basis through SMART payment plan. They set you up to pay half of you monthly car payment every 2 weeks. I purchased my vehicle on 10/21/17. My monthly payment came out to about $250. I started making payments from my checking account about 2 weeks after my purchase (11/3/17 for $126.62). My 1st car payment was due Dec 5. So no problem there. I figured I would make 1 and a half payments by the time it was "due".

Well today (12/4) I happened to check my credit union statement, and no payments have posted. I call the credit union and ask why have there not been any payments posted? I have had 3 payments in the amount of $126.62 taken from my checking account. They said I need to call the SMART payment plan folks.

So I do. They tell me that they send 1 payment per month to the lender. They sent my payment for 2 of the 3 payments I have made (11/3 and 11/17) to my lender (credit union) on 11/28. The 3rd payment was made 12/1 so was not part of this payment. They send the payment about a week before the monthly payment is due so it will have time to process and post. The guy I talked to tried to explain that I would be making an extra payment over the course of the year by making biweekly payments. That would be true if the payments are applied biweekly. But in essence, with these guys, you are making monthly payments. It's just that some of them are more than your minimum monthly payment, which is not the same as making biweekly payments.

I was worried that the credit union would not process my payment from SPP before the due date (tomorrow), so I cancelled the SMART payment plan and made my full car payment today. The SPP people are supposed to refund my 3rd payment of 126.62 back to my checking account in 3-5 business days, minus a 1.95 transaction fee. I've still yet to see how much exactly they sent to the credit union for my payment, and an email confirmation of my cancellation.

My loan balance is about $130 more than it should be since the payments weren't applied directly. You are better off setting up automatic payments through your lender, and knowing that your money is going where (and when) it's supposed to go. I'm just glad I noticed this now and not several months down the road.
