I expierenced a couple of bad weeks in my life and decided to drink myself into obliteration. I ran my mouth off a little too much in my dispair and my mother, not used to seeing me in this state and being the poor naive woman that she is called for help. She later told me she expected me to sleep it off under the care of mental health experts. In my drunken stuper I willingly went to Stony Brook CPEP. I spent around 15 hours in their ""care"" before I was cut lose to go back to my life. In that time I was exposed to the sad truth of modern medicine.

I've never been to a place like this. While there, I witnessed and experienced some of the worst things I've ever seen with my own two eyes. Considering the circumstances, people who are brought there should be recieving healthcare. There was NO healthcare being provided what-so-ever. You are being PUNISHED for falling weak. It is obvious that the system is used as a money racket for the hospital. In the meantime the staff gets off on the pain and suffering of the patients. This facility needs to be investigated and the truth needs to come out. It is a machine, it operates without any checks and balances. It is out of control.

With the exception of a few lower level employees the staff was horrible. I liken the human sympathy they had for the people in there to that of Auschwitz, no exaggeration. Some of them wouldn't even look you in the eye. They talk down to you like you are a sub-human. Patients would knock on the glass and try to talk with the staff and they wouldn't even acknowledge them. The director was one of the most angry condescending people I've ever met. She was a short indian woman, and she makes it very clear that she does not care about you or your situation. God forbid you approach her and ask a question. I don't care what her justification in her mind is, it might not be a crime but IT IS WRONG! It literally reminded me of the Nazi woman in the labor camps. One female patient found out she was going to be released and she went to hug her. It broke my heart to see the director push her away and laugh, ""No no no, Hahah sorry, you can't touch me"" and then walk away. It was obvious that she loved saying that and being a ""better"" human being. The best part is these people are not ""better"", I don't consider them to be productive members of society. They are a stain on humanity and I know history will reveal it that way.

Stripped me of my dignity

In 2011 i was admitted into CPEP after taking an overdose of my medication. I had only turned 18 the day before and since i was still in high school I was in the separate section with the children. When the nurses first brought me there from the regular emergency room (i had been on watch for about 12 hours) they explained it to me as if i would just walk in, talk to a doctor, and then get to go home right away. They wouldn't let me say good bye to my mom or boyfriend and would not let me change into my regular clothes before i went in. Once i got there i was one of two girls in a gender mixed area, and of course also had staff watching us through the fiberglass. I begged 3 different employees ( the only ones that came anywhere near me) for my clothes (besides the fact that i felt uncomfortable being in a room with mixed company wearing only a hospital gown and a thong, i had also gotten my period)and to tell me when i'd get to see the doctor . They wrote me off right away and didn't even give me any feminine products . Hours passed and i wound up setting up a bed. i was woken up twice during the night. the first time by one of the only nice staff members there that was truly compassionate. When she lead me to my first interview i had a trail of blood falling behind me and that was when i was finally able to get a pair of pants, a maxi pad, and she even allowed me to shower. The second time i was woken up was to talk to one of the doctors. I don't remember his name, but he had an extreme attitude and looked down onto me and was extremely rude and lacking. I was told that id be woken up a third time so i could finally leave with my family, instead i was transferred to South Oaks Hospital. I would have been kept at CPEP longer if my psychiatrist didn't fight with the doctors on the phone to get me transferred. He had heard rumors of the terrible conditions there and advised my parents to get me removed immediately.
