TaxACT Reviews

  • Mar 19, 2015

I have used TaxAct for several years to file my yearly Federal Income Tax returns and its online filing s/w is ok even though at times it was a bit redundant. This year 2014 and last year 2013, TaxAct started to implement fees to use its service but without letting us know upfront that it has changed its policy.

TaxAct advertised as a free filing service but in reality it was a charge service. To file your tax return either online or using paper filing, you still have to pay a fee of $12.99 charge as of online filing. There was no indication whatsoever regarding about its attempt to trap the tax filers in paying the fee at the end of the filing process. Usually, tax filers had to pay the demanded fee from TaxAct or he/she can not file its tax return online or even print it out. With that much of time invested in preparing the tax return, most of us will give in to TaxAct's demand and pay for it with an unhappy feeling that we have been deceived by TaxAct.

From now on, I will not use TaxAct anymore. I am done with its antic.

Unfortunately I had the same experience as the others - I was doing my state taxes and I did not appear to be informated that I could not efile my state taxes until the final page of printing them out. I was dumbfounded to see I had to sign a copy and phsically mail them into the Nebraska Dept of Revenue, what is this the 1990s?

I then completed the FREE efilig though the Nebraska Depart of Revenue's website which took about 20 additional minutes. I then contacted TAXACT.com's customer service to ask for a refund, since I paid $16 to print my state taxes which I would never had bothered entering and printing if they advised me that I would have to mail in my state return.

I received an email response two hours later -

It appears that your federal and/or state returns have been printed and/or viewed in a printable PDF format. Since this is the case, we will be unable to issue a refund for the charge(s) you are requesting. At the time you created your return, you were asked to consent to our license agreement which did state:

"If the billing steps were completed when e-filing the return online or calling in to our support center and the return was rejected by the IRS and cannot be re-filed, it is the user's responsibility to contact TaxACT's Customer Service Department within 30 days of the original billing date to request a full refund of the fees paid. If a return was printed, there would be no refund issued."

For your convenience, we have included a link to our Satisfaction Guarantee which is posted on our website:

Thank you for using TaxACT. Please let us know if you have any further questions.

Absolutely no help. Their website is constantly nagging to upgrade for advanced/deluxe features, it's like navigating a mine field.

Once you enter your credit card and print you're basically screwed according to their Satisfaction Guarantee. This kind of businss practice is deplorable.
