On September 4, 2014, I felt humiliated and cheated like never before because of my experience at the Toyota Dealership in Doral (a/k/a Toyota of South Florida).
Toyota Doral released an online ad in honor of Labor-Day, advertising a lease on Toyota Corolla 2014 LE for a $159 monthly payment and no down payment excluding tax and licensing fee payments.
I have no car but need one for work and can only afford to so much. I called the dealership to confirm the terms and was told by the representative there is no catch, and that I can come and pick up the 2014 car that same day for the $159 payment. There was no mention of any down payment or inception fee. I spoke to the representative, and begged him to be honest with me and tell me everything because I would have to take a bus for 3 HOURS to get to the branch and get the lease.
On September 4, my wife and I met with the representative at the branch. The representative told us the Corolla 2015 and Camry 2014 were available for lease, but he said the price would not be $159.00. He mentioned that the taxes could make monthly payment as high as $190.00, which my wife was shocked about because she has leased 2 cars from Toyota before and never heard of such a high tax. The representative told her he would calculate the monthly payment once we sit down with him. The representative then surprised us with a high $1,680 inception fee. Still, he said we could get the Corolla 2015 for under $200.00 with the inception fee, as long our credit was good.
We test drove the Corolla 2015, and were going to lease it, once we were told the exact or at least approximate monthly payment. We sat down with Orlando to discuss. My wife was going to be taking the car in her name, and specifically asked the representative to not run credit inquiry on her until we were told what the monthly price would be. My wife said that if there was going to be an inception fee, she did not want it higher than $1300.00.
My wife made it clear that until we had some understanding of what monthly fee would be, the representative did not have permission to run the credit inquiry. My wife and I are trying to get mortgage, and we do not want unnecessary credit inquiries. The representative said okay, let me go ahead and talk to my manager about this.
After 30 minutes of being gone without any explanation, he came back with a smile saying the financing advisor was ready to speak with us about the rate and that the credit inquiry came back okay. My wife and I were shocked! We told him how he carried out credit inquiry without our permission and behind our backs. He spoke back rudely to my wife, and when she responded in kind he left the room.
The financing advisor then told us that realistically the lease for the Corolla 2015 and Camry 2014 would be the same, and that the Camry is the best way to go. Well, with a $1,300.00 inception fee on the Camry, we were told the monthly payment was $279.00!! She said that even with the full $1,660.00 inception fee the monthly payment would be only a bit different. We were shocked, that Toyota could advertise such a low price, and then suddenly, for no reason at all, tell us the payment is more than a $100.00 greater, regardless of the inception fee.
We were told the manager would come speak with us, but we saw the manager did not even bother to get out of his office to come to us. There was no apology, no remorse. We left with indescribable anger, at the dealership's lies and the incredible conduct of running a credit inquiry when verbally advised that the inquiry is not to be run without further permission.
My wife has been leasing from Toyota since 2010. These people from Toyota Doral are a disgrace to the leasing business. My wife's current Toyota will be the last car we lease from Toyota, and I myself will be leasing from a different company, one that doesn't mistreat customers like this.
