Albergue Centre Esplai Reviews

I have booked this hostel in the hope of spending a comfortable and enjoyable stay in Barcelona, unfortunately it turned out to be a nightmare stay, here is why:

Awfully slow internet, you could wait for 15 minutes until you manage to open a single email and you can never use the WIFI to call your family or do your work. We spoke several times to the management about the slow internet, and excuses were all we got.

It was neither mentioned on the booking nor on the hotel terms that the room beds are actually very small dormitory style beds, although we booked a non-dormitory double room. We discovered that the beds in our room are dormitory beds. We have spoken to the management about this and they did nothing, actually they “all of a sudden” lost their English skills.

Very dirty bed covers that never been changed by the room service during our stay.

There were no safe lockers in the room, and only one key was provided. We had to carry our valuables everywhere, and guess what? My wallet was stolen in the Barcelona metro!

There was no telephone in the room or any other mean of communication that can connect you with the staff in the case of emergency.

There was no shower gel or shampoo to bath with.

We had to ask the reception to change the towels.

Very little variety in breakfast food (no eggs and one type of cheese).

Staff was not helpful and always rude. The night male receptionist was arrogant and rude and refused to help us get the air-conditioner to work although we complained to him twice just right after check-in. Also There was an evening blonde female receptionist who always pretended that she doesn't speak English to escape our complaints, although we spotted her several times speaking fluent English with other guests.

Very low standard of cleanness in this hotel especially in the bathrooms.

The pool area was neither air-conditioned nor ventilated to renew the air and keep the water closer to the current temperature, and so the water was awfully cold and there was no fresh air.

The hotel is approx 1 hour away from the city center by bus, in an isolated area that has only one small market for basic foods, no restaurants, no cafes and Zero nightlife.

We wanted to check out the second day we arrived but they refused to give us full refund, we couldn’t cancel because they requested a 48-hour notice that was clearly not part of their terms and conditions.

We have never faced this level of carelessness, arrogance, and overall incompetence in any hotel around Europe or anywhere else, the way this hostel is managed gives Barcelona’s tourism sector an undeservedly bad name.
