Avast (Bomgar) Reviews

  • Apr 21, 2014

I downloaded Avast free 30 day trial. After approximately one week I decided to uninstall the program. Up popped a warning that I had a bootleg copy of Windows 7 which simply isn't true. I've been getting updates on a registered copy for 4 years. A subsequent warning popped up and two updates that were not valid that the software allowed to be placed in a vault or deleted. I placed the updates in the vault and the entire computer screen blinked. All the desktop icons got dark, half of which got deleted. All my photographs and documents disappeared. I called the customer service number for Avast and guess what? Bomgar, one of the biggest on-line virus remover ripoffs on the Internet. Mind you, I had never not been using a virus protection software. The woman that answered seemed way too nice for a guy that was having a problem with a free download. Sure enough, she offered a remote consult. It was then I understood what a big ripoff this entire experience turned out to be. On Christmas eve I mistakenly downloaded a virus from a fake legal attachment. (long story) I was tired, out of time and paid $99.00 to have the virus removed from a company which happened to be Bomgar. Thirteen hours later the issue was resolved. Considering the circumstances, it was worth it. So here I am, speaking with a Bomgar representative again. I'm assuming their records are not easily accessed by email or address or phone number, because this lady was clueless I used Bomgar before. Whatever suspicions I had about this attempted uninstall of Avast was confirmed when I allowed her to remotely access my files. She immediately started referencing files which were viruses that were logged shortly before I used Bomgar on Christmas eve. She then rattled off two new browsers I was using as additional viruses which I knew was a crock. She then, of course, offered to transfer me over to a representative to take care of the problem for $99.00 on a one shot deal or $150.00 for a year coverage. I then told her what a scam I thought the whole thing seemed to be and told her I was going to call the F.B.I. the next day and file a report and guess what? She terminated the phone call and remotely sped through my files opening and closing pages. It took about 3 minutes. She then signed off. I restarted my computer and everything was back to normal. Hard to believe, but it happened. Maybe Avast isn't tied in with these people, but even if there is no association the uninstall is a nightmare.
