CoverHound, Inc. Reviews

  • Jul 7, 2014

I ordered classic car insurance at a decent price from CoverHound who sold me a Safeco Policy for my Porsche 911. I signed an agreement with them where they had checked boxes for the two items I needed to send them. These two items were my drivers license and pictures of the car. I did as they asked. There were several boxes left unchecked including appraisal. I would not have used them had they checked appraisal as I do not know where to get one and they are expensive.

A couple weeks later I was changing my checking account and called to update my billing and CoverHound said I was scheduled to be cancelled and they sounded surprised and I was very surprised, I had only paid one month. They said I was being cancelled because Safeco wanted an appraisal. They made some suggestions and these suggestions were going to cost me $255-$455, which is up over half my premium. I sent all they required and showed recent pictures, some at a local car show.

After this notification, I sent them the NADA book value. Avg book for this vehicle was $4k less than the insured amount and I was fine with that. I offered to pay for the cheapest appraisal if they would credit it towards my bill. They would not hear of it. After going back and forth with the agents, they will not budge or honor the contract they had me sign. Fraudelent in my opinion and I will be reporting them to the Alabama State Insurance Commision and let them investigate.

What really makes them look bad, besides not honoring the "Docusign" contract they had me sign, was that I got a Thank You note from them on Saturday May 17th after days of trying to sort this out with CoverHound. Safeco sent me a cancellation notice on Monday May 19th saying I had to find other insurance by Sunday May 25th. No way I could even get an appraisal done that quickly. Safeco never sent me a notice saying they needed an appraisal and CoverHound never notified me either.

I would have just found out Monday evening had I not tried to change my billing info last week. By the way, Hagerty is insuring me without appraisal for less than CoverHound/Safeco and Allstate will cover the car also but at a higer price than CoverHound Safeco unless you add in the $255 appraisal cost. Then both are cheaper. Is their business model to just take a month's premium and then drop people?

This was billed as classic car insurance and you could find the value on NADA and I had pictures to back it up and I offered to let one of their agents come by and see the car. No excuse for them to add this in after only two weeks. It would have been bad enough if they cancelled at the renewal time a year later, but to breach their contract and do it after two weeks?
