Downeast Vacation Rentals Reviews

When I called to inquire about this property, I told them that I would get back to them if we were interested in renting the Calling Loon property in Blue Hill. When I called to book the property I was told it was already booked and we would have to choolse another. Picked another property, a couple weeks went by and we had still gotten no contract to sign. Callled again and they emailed contract for the second property. They called us about 10 days or so later and told us we had reseved 2 properties and "which did we want". This was news to us since they had told us Calling Loon was booked. Turns out that they booked us into both properties. We then received emailed contract for Calling Loon property and signed and returned it with our deposit.

They had sent us the address of the property along with a code for the lock box where the key was. We drove to the address on a wooded dirt road and it was a run down shack and didn't look like what we had seen online. Called them again and was told that "that really isn't the address". A lady from the company came and led us to the correct address which was nearby. She was in a great hurry, got the key from the lockbox and gave it to us and rushed off to get something out of the garage and quickly left. We gathered some things from the car and opened the door to the house only to find very old, worn, uncomfortable furniture. The house itself was well built and attractive but the furnishings were awful. ( I have photos).

We could not get the gas grill on the small porch to work and the porch light didn't work either so if we came back at night we had to leave the car headlights on to see where to put the key. When I pulled out a cast iron skillet to cook there was grease and dried food on the bottom of it. We couldn't seem to get the tv to work in the master bedroom either. We arrived later Friday afternoon. I called and left a message reporting these problems with Downeast Maine Rentals. We never received a response of any kind.

The contract essentially stated that there were no refunds or adjustments for anything so "don't ask" was the message received. It also stated that any grill had to be "6' from the house or porch". The grill was on a small porch next to the house! Were we then supposed to drag it down the steps and into the yard??

In the livingroom - Couch was old wooden and pillowed with matching chair, probably 1960's or so. We ended up padding the sofa with a quilt and then using the foam bed pillows to make it somewhat comfortable. There was also a orange velvet swivel rocker with the arms worn down to almost nothing, the seat pillow had shrunk over time and the board at the bottom hits your legs uncomfortably. It also squeeked loudly with any movement.

Bedrooms - Junky dresser(s), beds with sheets and blanket only, no bedspread or quilt, old foam pillows that were very flat.

Bath - sink was very small

The lake was not very accessable and you had to battle thru a great deal of underbrush to get to it. There was a rickety dock out to a floating deck but when stepped on, the dock submerged. There was a lot of underbrush right down to the lake and it was very muddy and rocky with weeds. Not at all inviting.

There was deep errosion to the steep drive that made it somewhat difficult to get up to the house.
