Everest University Reviews

  • May 1, 2015

After attending Everest I was presented with a lower paying job than I already had. They dealt with me from a distance after graduating. Playing phone tag and never getting return phone calls. When I would physically go to the school often I would just be stuck in a room with a computer and told to look on the Internet (as if I wasnt already doing that on my own time). Eventually I just gave up and found a job not even related to my field of study. Most of the jobs I did find wouldn't even recognize Everest as a "real" college.

I am a student at Everest Houston Greenspoint enrolled in the Information Technology Program. I first met with the admissions manager on or about the 1-20-15 and again on 1-27-15 when I decided to enroll. I choose Everest because I was led to believe it was well run, with an easy to understand but challenging IT program taught by a highly educated professor with a reputation for being a good instructor. I was led to believe that I would be enrolling in a program that would get me ready to enter the workforce with the right knowledge and certifications that employers are looking for.

I began a day late on the 28th of February 2015. I did not receive orinataion. I did received a syllabus, reading material, a backpack, IT tool kit and shirts. I also did not receive my computer until February 2nd or my external hard drive (WD My Passport) until the 5th.

Since the beginning of school to the present date 2-23-15 many red flags have gone up.

There was only one instructor for two classes happening simultaneously; which forced both classes to share part of our 4 hrs

The class was not geared towards beginners, as my admissions manager had said. She said “The instructor shows you everything from how to turn on the computer all the way up” My first and only class was over Linux and Mac (two separate operating systems)

The internet speed is inadequate to conduct classes that rely on computers to produce work and learn. I have 11 speed tests done over 6 days at various times to prove this.

There were no lectures or step by step demonstration done by the instructor; with exception of 2 YouTube videos.

The syllabus was not followed. There was a test given before it appeared on the syllabus and out of the 4 weeks I attended we only got through week 1 of the syllabus.

The work that was done was not able to be turned in. The instructor, Professor Belton, would not accept it until he finished his portal; which wasn’t ready until 2-16-15 and to date has not been graded. This allows no way for students know if what we had completed and studied to be correct or not.

February 20th there was nothing for students who were done with their work to do since there were no Week 2 handouts or labs given to us but there was a due date for the work of February 23rd at 11:59pm. (We did not receive them that day or over the weekend)

February 23rd I arrived at school to find out from 3 of my classmates that the Professor would not be coming back to class. He had called or texted those students to deliver the news. We sat without an instructor the entire day.

As of today, February 24th, I have withdrawn from this school. I have asked to not be billed beyond materials used and 10 days of instruction time. The Director of Education and the Finance Department informed me that only the Campus President could make adjustments to the billing and he declined to meet with me. This situation, as everything thus far, has been handled poorly.

It is my experience that the statements made by admissions are misleading and all together incorrect. The Instructors are spread too thin and lack the organization necessary to effectively lead a classroom. The school is not set up to properly to run high speed internet to support an Information Technology program and the campus President shifts blame on what has transpired to the students instead of taking responsibility and agreeing to meet with students who have been so profoundly affected. I only hope that this and the other reviews I have posted save future students of being robbed of their time and money by an institute that is not qualified to run an IT program.

My daughter was interested in further her education in 2012 so we went to Everest University in Largo,Fl. We met with the staff and went spoke with a gentleman regarding financial aide. The man had my daughter fill out her information and asked if I was interested in co-signing the loan. I explained that I was going through a divorce and my credit was not good enough. The man insisted that I should try and if it doesn't go through then no harm.

Well, he came back about 20 minutes later and said,"Yeah, it didn't go through but at least we know". So I had let the thought go until I went to check my credit and was blown away as it was showing that I "owe" a student loan. I immediately called Everest University and explained to Admin that this bill should not be on my credit because I was told that my credit was not good enough for it to go through.

The admin pretty much told me that I was a liar and that "his" employees would not tell someone that a loan didn't go through if they knew that it had. He told me that I owe it and I need to pay it. I was told by the man in financial aide that my credit was not good enough to co-sign for it and now I am getting billed?

I am trying to build up my credit and I do not need this. I have called and asked to get this resolved and that the man my daughter and I spoke with flat out lied to me but it is falling on deaf ears. Can someone please help me. I am at my wits end and I don't what to do. Please help me.

Everest called and called until I registered, they promised I would find a job with my degree afterwards and I didn't. I told them I did so they would quit calling me 3 times a day and bugging me. I got my degree and was told my credits would transfer but they don't. I didn't receive my diploma for months because they said I owed them $. Never had a problem with any other semesters which I find very funny.

Come to find out that they said they never received my signed promisary note for my financial aid. They never contacted me during my last semester to tell me this. infact they never contacted me at all about it until I called two months after I finished school to find out about my diploma. they insisted that they did call and said it was my fault but they could take payments without reporting it to the credit bureau unless I didn't pay. I cried and cried because they had already put me so far in debt but didn't want anything bad on my credit. I have been paying 45 a month since 10/2012 and they still contact me wanting me to pay in full.

I am really in debt because of this school, still can't get a job that pays anything like it should with someone with a degree in computer science and I will have to start all over at another school because my credits won't transfer like they told me. I have 4 kids and a house to support and don't know if I can even afford attending another college without hurting what little income I have.

everest has been calling like crazy since the law suits began and they are boarder line harassing me with their messages. I want my money back, a good job with my degree and for no one to get ripped off by this "school" again.

Everest school kept calling so I decided to enroll and started in 2008 and was there for 4 years to get an Associates degree.

Then the month before graduating they told me I would not receive a diploma until I gave them more money out my pocket because I syill had a blance and my loans did not cover it. I never graduated and I am now 50,000 dollars in debt with no degree or job from them. They syill keep calling about this account balance which they wil never gt becasue the school is a scam and only out for money and to make you more in debt. The instructors are terrible and do not care what you learn. I figured online learning would be great for me because I have children but in reality his school ripped me off. I wish I would have never enrolled now. If there is a class action lawsuit or something I can do about this rip off school please let me know as I am in Pa.

Have you been defrauded of a legit degree and held hostage to pay for fees? This is for you:

This is a Personal Service Announcement concerning Everest Universities and Colleges, aka Corinthian Colleges:

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau has filed a lawsuit against above named for-profit educational institute dated September 16, 2014:

Consumer Financial Protection Bureau

Urgent Information for Current and Former Students Enrolled at Corinthian-Owned Schools

Today, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) sued Corinthian Colleges,

Inc., owner of Everest, Heald, and WyoTech, for using illegal tactics to induce

students into taking out private student loans. The CFPB’s lawsuit also alleges that

Corinthian violated the law by harassing borrowers to make payments by pulling

students from class, and preventing them from attending class, registering,

graduating, and receiving a diploma.

In recent months, Corinthian Colleges has stated its intent to sell or close many of its

campuses. We are publishing this special information for current and former

students at Corinthian schools; we urge you to read it carefully so you fully

understand your options and obligations on your student loans.

Reporting Potentially Illegal Practices2

What should I do if I believe that Corinthian engaged in illegal practices that harmed

me?

Your Student Loans

Do I have to repay my federal and private student loans if Corinthian

broke the law?

 You are still responsible for repaying your student loans. However, the CFPB

is seeking relief for private student loan borrowers who took out loans after

July 2011.

 Some states offer assistance to borrowers if their school closes or is implicated

in a lawsuit. You may be eligible for relief if your state offers a tuition recovery

fund.

 To protect your credit record, you should continue to make your loan

payments until you fully understand your options.

How do I know if I have federal or private loans?

 Federal loans typically have names such as Stafford, Grad PLUS, Direct, or

Perkins. If you aren’t sure what kind of loans you have, visit the National

Student Loan Database System for Students for a list of all federal loans made

to you.

 Private loans are often issued by a bank, a credit union, your school, or

another lending institution. They might use names like “private” or

“alternative.” Some Corithian students may have taken out private loans from

the “Genesis” program. Unlike federal student loans, there is not a single

website that contains information about all of your private student loans. If

you do not know about private student loans you might have, request a free

credit report. Private student lenders may report your loans to credit

reporting agencies even while you’re still in school or in deferment.

I am currently employed. Can Corinthian take money from my paycheck

to repay my private student loan?

 The short answer is no, unless they have a court order. If your loan is in

default, your school may sell the loan to a debt collector who may take steps to

get you to repay. For borrowers in default, it is important to remember that

there are major differences between federal and private student loans. The

federal government has extraordinary tools to collect on defaulted federal

student loans; however, many of these tools are not available to debt

collectors seeking to collect on your defaulted private student loan. A debt

collector trying to collect payments on a private student loan can not:3

o Garnish your wages without a court order

o Seize your federal or state tax refund

o Garnish your Social Security or Social Security disability check

o Prevent you from receiving federal student aid to go back to school in

the future

If Your Corinthian-Owned School Shuts Down

What are my options if my school is closing?

 Generally, you have a few options if your school notifies you that it is closing.

You may be able to:

o Withdraw from the school and potentially receive a refund for the costs

paid to your school.

o Complete your program at your campus before closure. If you choose to

complete your program, you will not be able to apply for a refund or a

loan discharge (to cancel your loans).

o Accept an offer which allows you to transfer to a comparable program

at another Corinthian school at no additional cost. You may be able to

transfer to a program at a non-Corinthian program, but there may be

additional costs.

 You can review a list of Corinthian schools that are closing here. The

Department of Education has prepared other information on policies and

benefits for students attending schools that close.

What if I took out federal loans to attend a Corithian-owned school that

is now closing?

 If you have federal student loans and are currently enrolled or recently left a

college or university that has shut its doors, you may be able to discharge

(cancel) your loans if you apply for a loan discharge. This option is only a

possibility if your school closes. If you are attending a school that is sold you

may not be eligible for discharge under this process, even if your school no

longer offers your program of study.

 If you do have your federal loans discharged and you end up completing your

program at a similar school, you may have to pay back the loans that were

discharged.

What if I took our private loans to attend a Corinthian-owned school that

is now closing?

 You are still responsible for repaying your student loans. However, the CFPB

is seeking relief for private student loan borrowers who took out loans after

July 2011. 4

 Some state laws may provide for relief on your loan if your school closes. Your

state may also offer programs that assist students with private student loans

in the event of a school closure.

What if I am offered a “teach-out” to complete my program?

 If your school has announced that it is closing, you may be offered a “teach

out,” an arrangement through which you may be able to complete your

program and receive your degree or certificate.

 If you accept a “teach-out” to complete your program at your school or

another school, you will be responsible for repaying all of your student loans.

If you decline a “teach-out” offer and your school closes, you may not have to

pay back your federal student loans.

 Under an agreement between Corinthian and the Department of Education, if

you enrolled in a Corinthian-owned school after June 22, 2014, you will have

the option to choose to participate in a teach-out or opt to receive a refund of

your tuition costs. If you enrolled before June 22, 2014, you may not have this

option.

Your Rights When Dealing with Debt Collectors

What are some of the legal limits on what debt collectors can say or do?

 The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA), the main federal law that

governs debt collection practices, prohibits debt collection companies from

using abusive, unfair or deceptive practices to collect past due debts from you.

 Generally speaking, debt collectors may not contact you at an unusual time or

place, or at a time or place they know is inconvenient to you. If a debt collector

knows that you’re not allowed to receive the debt collector’s calls at work then

the debt collector is not allowed to call you there. If a debt collector knows

that an attorney is representing you about the debt, the debt collector

generally must stop contacting you and must contact the attorney instead.

This is only true if the debt collector knows, or can easily find out, the name

and contact information of your attorney. If an attorney is representing you

and a debt collector calls, tell them which attorney is representing you and

that the debt collector should contact the attorney instead.

Can debt collectors tell other people about my debt?

 No. Under federal law, a debt collector may contact other people but generally

only to find out where you live, what your phone number is, and where you

work.

 Debt collectors generally can’t contact more than once people you know and

they can’t say they’re trying to collect on a debt. Generally, a debt collector 5

can’t discuss your debt with anyone other than; you, your spouse, your

parents (if you are a minor), your guardian, or your attorney.

 If the debt collector knows an attorney is representing you about the debt, the

debt collector must contact the attorney instead of you.

What is harassment by a debt collector?

 The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) says debt collectors can’t

harass, oppress, or abuse you or anyone else they contact. Some examples of

harassment are:

o Repetitious phone calls that are intended to annoy, abuse, or harass

you or any person answering the phone

o Obscene or profane language

o Threats of violence or harm

o Publishing lists of people who refuse to pay their debts (this does not

include reporting information to a credit reporting company)

o Calling you without telling you who they are

 The FDCPA also says debt collectors can’t use false, deceptive, or misleading

practices. This includes misrepresentations about the debt, including:

o The amount owed

o That the person is an attorney

o False threats to have you arrested

o Threats to do things that cannot legally be done

o Threats to do things that the debt collector has no intention of doing

What information does a debt collector have to give me about the debt?

 Any debt collector who contacts you claiming you owe payment on a debt is

required by law to tell you certain information about the debt. That

information includes the name of the creditor, the amount owed, and how you

can dispute the debt or seek verification of the debt. If the debt collector

doesn’t provide that information in the initial contact with you, the debt

collector is required to send you a written notice including that information

within five days of the initial contact.

Reporting Potentially Illegal Practices

that harmed me?

financial products offered by a school they can submit a complaint to the

Bureau through our website, www.consumerfinance.gov/complaint. You can

Everest University is a rip off. They called menumerous of times until i decided to sign up with them. I told them i hadnt even finsihed High School yet, but they insisted that wasnt a problem. They started sending me mail about loans i never approved of. When i called them, i was told theres nothing they could do to help me, but insisted i payed it! Theres gotta be something i can do!

Not realizing this would be the biggest mistake of my life. I found Florida Metropolitan University on a TV commercial. When I went to the Admissions Dept. I expressed to them my interest in becoming a nurse and they persuaded me to enter their Medical Assistant Program because LPN where being "faced out" and a RN degree would just take too long to obtain. They specifically said if later on I wanted to continue my studies I would not have any problems since the school was an university. I realize I failed to do any kind of research and trusted what I was being told. But I believed. I applied and attended their school. I worked full time during the day and went to school at night was able to graduate with a Associate in Science, Medical Assisting Summa Cum Laude in July of 2000. Let me mention my approx $26,000 in student loans which I have not been able to pay off.

Now 10 years later I was laid off after working for a doctor all of this time and realized this was the time to return to school. I applied at Seminole State College an accepted. Looking at their pre-reqs for A.S. Registered Nurse to continue for B.S. in Nursing I said to myself great I have only 2-3 classes to take since I already have a A.S. speaking to the advisor she tells me F.M.U. was not an accredited school and my classes will not transfer. I wanted to die! 2 years of sacrifice no sleep and tons of money down the drain because I am stock! I have to start from scratch like nothing matters. It its 10 times harder to complete everything now after so many years out of school. F.M.U. robbed me!! My degree is no good for advancement unless I attend the schools from their world!! I am very frustrated and don't know where to turn. Something clearly must be done to allow thousands of Alummi's like me. It is clearly wrong and not fair for us to have to start over when we clearly earned our degrees. Schools like F.M.U. now Everest I believe should not be able to operate, they should have in all of their print material NOTICE ANY COURSES TAKEN IN THIS SCHOOL WILL NOT COUNT IN ANY PUBLIC COLLEGE OR UNIVERSITY.

I began my college career in the summer of 2013 at Everest University. I was put into contact with an admissions advisor, after 3 hrs. And being put through various aggressive sales techniques I was rushed off to the financial aid department. After an hour and a half of this I was told I would owe $2,000.00 in loans and that the rest was taking care of through Pell grant money. Wow, I thought this was great because I was unemployed and a stay at home mom with a husband who works very hard for very little. I was told the loan payments would be due 6 months after graduating and was promised to have a job within that time making great money. Well after researching the university this spring I started to worry about my loan amount because I had read of so many students from the same school owing between $20,000. To $30,000 in loans. I called the financial department and was informed I owed $12,000.00 in loans and that since I had E-signed those documents I was expected to pay them. I was devastated. How could I have misunderstood? I didn’t. I was scammed. I was never told I was signing an agreement to pay $12,000. In loans. After researching further I found quite a lot of documents with managers stating that they would never consider hiring a student from this school and that Human resources from these companies throw away resumes from these applicants because of the school’s reputation for lack of training. Now I owe $12,000. In loans I can’t afford to pay for credits that cannot be transferred to a reputable university or college. I am devastated. This has to be against the law. How can you say you’re selling something for a certain amount and then have a person sign a contract then change the contract and not provide the promised services? Tax money is being wasted on these schools at enormous amounts in this country. This has to stop.

Everest University is a college that is not accredited with SACS, which means that 99% of all credits earned at this institution will not transfer to a real college like Florida, Florida State, Miami, USF, UCF, Saint Leo, or Georgia. The only credits that will transfer are the entry level math, English, and computer courses. Furthermore SACS schools (i.e. real schools) will not accept the credits from Everest University.

Everest University used to be called Florida Metropolitan University (FMU) from 1995-2008. FMU changed its name because a group of students sued FMU due to its lack of accreditation with SACS and the fact that their credits/degrees would not be transferable to a SACS school. The students also sued FMU because FMU advisers claimed that the credits and degrees would transfer despite the fact they clearly would not. Actually not even the community colleges will accept Everest of FMU credits.Prior to 1995 FMU was called Tampa College and had to change its name in 1995 because a group of students sued Tampa College for the exact same scam. Every few years this group of scam artists get sued by angry students that are under-employed or unemployed as a result of being duped into getting phony degrees that are worthless. Once this group of scam artists gets sued they change their name and settle out of court with the students, and in exchange for settling out of court the students get a tiny bit of their money back and a gag order placed on them for life.

Currently I have FMU credits that are worthless and have been fighting with Sallie Mae to get my FMU related student loans discharged since FMU is now closed, and since FMU lied about the value of their education in comparison to other institutions.

Do not take classes here, don't even think about it. Its a scam to trick the working poor into taking courses that cost more per credit hour then classes at the University of Florida. Save your time and money and go to your local Community College which is cheaper and is fully accredited.

You have been warned.
