This is a summary of repeated phone & Internet contacts by two men presenting themselves as C. Caleb of IBM, India Pvt, Ltd and Mike Nicholas, a hiring manager with Aastha Health Care, a small hospital in India. I mention the business names only as the men claimed to be associated with them and they may well use those names again. I seriously doubt that either business knows anything about the apparent scam Calab & Nicholas are operating. Calab found my wife’s resume online, called her from 848-482-8322, and set up an interview via Yahoo IM. Then he supposedly gave her resume to Nicholas. For all we know they may be the same person.

The interview was a farce to anyone familiar with interview processes. At first we thought he was probing for bank information. Although he asked for that, he didn’t persist when she responded with more detailed questions about this $20/hr job offer. The eventual hook wasn’t given until the second day when he advised her that she had been hired. She was assured that she was an employee of the company with full benefits and a 401K rather than as an independent contractor. Even so, she would now have to buy several pieces of software from one of their “trusted vendors.”

When she asked about the price of this software he basically said it was expensive but the company would send her a check so she could pay for it. He sidestepped numerous questions such as why a small (60 bed) hospital in India wanted to outsource data entry work to individuals in the USA, why an employee had to buy software or why a company in India supposedly expanding into the USA didn’t have the capacity to have their trusted vendor ship her the software since she was now one of the hospital’s employees and bill them directly. He alluded to the hospital trying to expand into the United States but never offered any concrete information about that even though her hiring was supposedly based on their expansion into the U.S.

He finally decided she was wasting his valuable time and didn’t seem like a person who would follow company instructions. He wished God to bless her back and ended the contact.
