We are two months from the end of our lease. I have provided Karen's name to my prospective landlord expecting a decent reference for five years of paying rent on time and keeping her house in good condition. The house was in poor condition when we arrived, which was documented. It was a college party house for 15-20 years before we moved in. The house is in better condition with lots of cleaning, painting the exposed drywall that was in the bathroom, a forced rennovation in our third year after a black water flood from old sewage/plumbing, and throwing away the accumulation of garbage from her previous tenants.
Yesterday she told my prosepective landlord that we never paid rent on time and started blowing up about damage to her property. I am still in shock. She does not gain anything by saying negative (and untrue) things about me as a tenant. She is just trying to set up her argument against me. I have proof of payment only in the the checks I provided. I know she will try to keep our deposit, but I feel helpless when confronted with her rage. I was told she owns many houses in Fort Collins, and does this every time. I will report back on what happens after the dust has settled, I have a feeling it's not going to be pleasant.
Do not rent from her, she acted nice then turned on us.
