Kirkwood Valley Lodging Reviews

Larry Cameron offered a job to me as a Lodge Supervisor for Kirkwood Valley Lodging, of which he is a property manager. When first telling me about this supposed position, he convinced me that he actually owned all of these properties and others. But he did not. He told me I'd be taking rental applications for people coming to the area and skiing, staying in the rooms at the Tower and other ski lodges. He said I'd have my own office to work out of, which was in the same condominium village where he moved me into. He would pay part of the rent in a kind of trade for me to work for this company. He also said i'd be doing "light housekeeping".

What he did not tell me was that there were not many customers who wanted to rent from him. He'd acquired a very bad reputation as a shyster, with a bad temper, and a drinking problem. One of the antics he'd perform was to dance on the bar in his underwear during the openng night of the Tower Bard and Grill, each year. Luckily I was never to witness this sight, as I quit and moved back to my home area. But not before a frightening experience there in the Kirkwood mountains.

Larry rarely ever showed up to his business, staying in Nevada where he lived, and coming up to Kirkwood sporadically when he felt like showing up. There were 3 or 4 others working for him. They were all men, who were also drinkers and drug users like himself. He seemed to love to surround himself with people who were less than able and had problems, and no people skills. One of the guys smoke marijuana all of the time, even had a medical marijuana prescription.

Larry gave these others spaces to live there in the Tower. I don't know how they paid for their own food or paid any bills, as he didn't actually pay people, in the normal way that a business owner would. There were no deductions taken out of my pay, or their's either. He also told me that during the summer months I would be able to work in his Burger Cafe in Markleeville. But this never transpired.

During the months of September, October and November Larry called me and came over to my condo with cases of beer. He proceeded to get very drunk. He did this on several occassions. One night he passed out on my sofa. In the morning his wife called him to see where he was, and he had to go home. Later I felt uncomfortable with him as I didn't want his wife to think I was up to anything with him. As I'd known him in high school and had history with him.

At about the month of late November the weather became very cold and it was snowing quite a large amount, up to 6 feet. And sometimes the temps were below zero at night. I had no car that was able to transport me in the snow, just a Toyota Corolla.

On a few occasions Larry became verbally abusive, yelling at me for no reason except that (1) I asked him when he would allow me to fill out an I-9 form for work. As this was what I usually did when I began a new job. (2) When I asked a question about my duties I was supposed to be getting trained for. He also yelled at me about trivial matters, which we would later apologize for. But then do it again and again as if he had no control over his temper.

One day about early December, with his other "employees" around him, he became verbally abusive towards me because I could no unload his truck. There was ice on the ground also and a bilzzard had just begun. And the ground was uneven. When I was carrying some of the objects in from outside he again began screaming and bellowing at me, for nothing. So I went into his office and told him I quit. And then I went home to the condo.

2 days later I contacted my family and told them what was happening, they were appalled to say the least. And I began the process of moving and packing to get away from him. About that time he told me I had to get out of the property in the middle of December, as he supposedly had someone else to rent it already. When I left I had no cash, as he would not pay me for the last 2 weeks I'd been cleaning empty condominiums. I later found out from my next-door-neighbors that no persons moved into my condo for months.

About a week later I moved out and back to my home area. I had to leave most of my belongings there, as I had no way to move them in that time. He allowed someone to steal a lot of my things, including computer parts and even some clothes. And my next-door-neighbor finally took my belonging back from Larry and stored them for me until I went back to get them in the summer of 2011.

The whole experience was disappointing to say the least. I stayed there for just 3 months before getting fed up and leaving.
