Purchased a 2013 "certified" pre-owned BMW 328i X drive on 1/25/2014 with 25,561 miles from Motor Werks in Barrington Illinois. After purchase, car has been in the shop for multiple issues. The first time it went to Motor Werks to fix the following on 1/30/2014:
- Left rear seatbelt inverted
- Part of the grill missing
- Scratches on trunk
- Remove tinted windows (illegal in Chicago)
- All tires need replacement
- Warning light on (right headlight needed to be replaced)
- No floormats
- High-Pitched noise/whistle while in reverse (was not fixed)
- Loud/annoying rattle coming from rear-right side of the car (was not fixed)
The service was completed on 2/6/2014. On 3/13/2014, I took the car into Perillo BMW in Chicago to fix the high-pitched noise/whistle while in reverse and received the car back on 3/15/2014. Both were not fixed.
I took my car to Perillo again on 3/28/2014. After a careful inspection, Perillo BMW found that the transmission needed to be replaced.
According to BMW's website for Certified Pre-Owned Vehicles (bmwusa.com/Standard/Content/CPO/Certification.aspx):
"So what does a pre-owned BMW have to do in order to achieve Certified status? A later model with less than 60,000 miles, a Certified Pre-Owned BMW is tested against our comprehensive Certified Pre-Owned vehicle inspection checklist by a BMW-trained technician, where everything from how the engine performs to the operation of the glove box is scrutinized. And every Certified Pre-Owned BMW also comes with a vehicle history report available for viewing on your BMW center website."
Tested? Inspected? I have a hard time believing that given all of the problems to date. Furthermore, I am concerned that my BMW was fraudulently certified. I asked for the certification report after I purchased the car. The report was sent to me on 2/21/2014. The CPO (Certified Pre Owned) enrollment date was 1/9/2014. The technician signed the certification on 1/11/2014 while the service manager and the pre-owned manager signed the certification on 2/6/2014. Remember, I purchased my car on 1/25/2014. How could the service manager and pre-owned manager sign off on the certification after my car was purchased and in my possession?
I offered to undo the deal by giving the BMW back in return for a full refund of $35,310 (tax included). That was rejected. To pour salt on the wound, the salesperson told me that they would offer me a "smoking transaction" if I were to trade my car in for a new one. After going through the process, the trade-in value was 9% less than other dealerships offered to me and the car that they were offering to me was 6% more than the same car at other dealerships. Not a "smoking transaction.
