My Netgear N300 router stoped working. I attempted to follow the online support but when all of those suggestions failed I called the hardware support.

Despite a lifetime hardware warantee, I was told that I would need to pay for any support before it was given becasue phone support expired. I was told that this support costs $70 for 6 months (the router itself only costs $75). So even though my hardware is covered under warantee I have to pay them to reactivate phone support in order to find out if I can get the faulty hardware replaced.

When I asked why it would not be covered under hardware, the tech lied and tried to tell that despite the device not being connected to the internet (the device was unpluged during the call), he detected that the device was functioning fine.

In my experience, NetGear a time-wasting, unprofessional firm that has ripped me off. Check the ripoff report for many other similar reports on this racket.

Their router works at my home at about 1 kb per second speed right now and I'm at full capability with my cable provider, upgraded recently by my choice to 30 Gig and approx 10 mbps speed. I'd rather sit through a time share presentation than ask for NetGear's assist re the slow speed!! But I tried.

I might have had a clue about the experience I was about to have if I'd known their Chief Technology Officer is named Capone. Really. I will place a call to the office of the California Attorney General. I will send a demand letter to their san Jose HQ. Let's see if the AG take an interest in this large firm's practices. How do I beleive they ripped me off? Short summary:

I purchased a new router Model WNR 2000v4 from an authorized reseller and kept my receipt. (These are two reasonable requirements under their warranty). One problem: After isolating the variables as they say, their router simnply doesn't work well at all. I dare you to call for help. A warranty that lasts as long as the current temperature. Sit through their foreign tech support person's screening as much info as my doctor, and exactly as many spoof, the Indian heavy accent, fast talking, baffle us with BS type, invest a half hour or more of diagnostic steps and wait for it...here it comes...Now, its not the hardware, its a "configuration issue." Huh? In order to help you, we'll need you to accept a 1 or 2 year service contract for $129 or $199 respectively. They spring the $$ trap.

Michael Falcon is Sr VP of Operations and Support. Support? Might that better be called Operations and Extortion! Patrick C.S. Lo is founder and CEO since 2002. CEO: Chief Extortion Orafice? The only path their reps will lead us down is the one with "Paid Support Options." Any other choice? Yes, free email from h***. You'll die of old age before it helps you.

Run, dont walk away from this company and their routers. I'll bet they actually work alot of the time. But run because they are too chicken-S*** to back what they sell.

Stay away from NetGear - I have a 2-year-old router with a lifetime warranty that stopped working.I spent 2 hours on the phone with a tech who got it working, but had me change a number somewhere which I think is now preventing my wireless devices to properly communicate with the router, now I have lots of dropped connections or uploads that time out.

I call back again to get this fixed and am told if they can't fix it, they'll send me a new one. But, if they can, then they will charge me $169 for a one-year premium customer membership where I can get this great expert help anytime. It's a $50 router - are they serious?! Lifetime warranty my a**.

Lifetime warranty means if it stops working and the manufacturer can't or doesn't wish to fix it, you get a new one.I would prefer to buy a new router from another company rather than spend another 2 hours on the phone with Netgear and pay $169 to fix a $50 2-year-old router.
