North American Power Reviews

  • Apr 4, 2015

About 13 months ago, I decided to get on the band wagon and save money on my utilitiy bills. I went to a website claiming to evaluate alternative utility providers. The name of that website was www.chooseenergy.com. The website recommended North American as the BEST!

Unfortunately, over the course of the year, UI did not carefully monitor my actual costs. last month, I decided to take a look to see how much money I saved on my natural gas supply. I was shocked to see that I paid just under 40% more for the gas supply than my regular utility company (National Fuel Gas) would have charged.

North American is a ripoff company and I am now part of a class action law suit to reclaim whatever I can from the unscrupulous liars at North American and their most likely affiliated Choose Energy website.

If you search reviews on North American, you will find many praising them as a quality supplier. The truth can be found in the fact that the Better Business Bureau no longer lists them as an accredited supplier.

Hope you benefit from my misfortune.

These scumbags start you out with a nice low rate, then they "send you a letter" advising you that the rate will go up exponentially. If you happen to not get the letter, or throw it out accidentally...and don;t read it thoroughly...TOO BAD. In addition, they never post anything to your online account warning you about the rate increase.

We were tempted to switch our electric power provider to a 3rd party (North American Power) after several solicitations came to our house promising lower rates than our local provider - and we had heard several ads on the radio. We switched in summer 2014 to a "fixed rate" of a little less than our default/home provider (at the time, the fixed rate was between $.08 and $.09 / kWh). After our "introductory rate" expired, they jacked the rate to over $.18/ kWh. Our home provider's (PSNH AKA EverSource) current rate is $.1056. When I opened my January 2015 bill on January 29, I nearly fell off my chair as it was almost twice that of the highest bill I have ever paid for electricity in 8 years at my house. I noticed that our electricity use in Janaury was signficantly less than our December usage, yet our bill was more than $100 higher. It wasn't until I called PSNH that I understood that our rate had been creeping up for the last 3 months. After I called North Amr Power today, they said they would give me a fixed 8-month contract of $.11 and refund me the difference (only for January - not December or February). They "gave" me that rate on almost the same date that I recieved yet another solicitation to my home from North Am Power for a rate of $.0989! I can't give one more cent to such a shady company and have decided to switch back to my home provider. The North Am Pwr BBB rating, come to find out, is a D. I wish I had done my homework in advance. In the end, the net cost to my family over about 10 months will be approximately $450 - that's $450 MORE than what I would have paid had I stayed with my home provider, after taking account of the tiny savings we received in summer 2014.

We were locked in at a rate of .0799 per KWH and without notice my rate had jumped to .13190, overcharging us $80.00. When I looked today, they have my rate at .18. Do not under any circumstances do business with this company. I have complaints with the BBB and Public Utyility Service Commission.

North American Power & Gas teases you with a low fixed rate and then hopes you forget to cancel when the contract period ends. I was in a rate plan of 5.99 cents per kWh. At the end of the contract, it jumped to 12.99 cents per kWh!! And at this time the "price to compare" of the default variable rate at the main utility company (First Energy) was only 6.76 cents! I looked on the state of Ohio "apples to apples" comparison and North American Power had the highest variable rate. Obviously this is how they make their $ by scamming people with a low rate and then hoping they fall into their astromically high rate at the end of the contract. And they said they mailed me a letter stating my contract was about to expire - I swear I never received this. I understand variable rates fluctuate with the market, but charging double what the "price to compare" default variable rate is equates to sheer greed, gouging, and unethical business practices. I will be sure to avoid them in the future and you should too!

Perhaps this is all "legal", but it certainly isn't ethical. For example, have you ever seen one gas station charge double what another gas station in the same area does? Likely no! North American Power is just trying to trap people so they can rape their wallets. And this is just greed to try to charge so much more than the market rate. This is a freaking utility company! They are going to make their $ anyway (it's not like we are all going to stop using electricity), so this is just pure greed to gouge like this! AVOID NORTH AMERICAN POWER & GAS, LLC (a.k.a. greedy price gouging unethical scammers)

This company offers electric rates of 0.799 per KWH in mailings. In fine print it says this is an introductory rate and is subject to change based on market conditions. I called and asked what the current "market rate" was at the time and was told it was still 0.799 per KWH. The first month was .0799 and the second month was 0.1149 per KWH. The power company currently charges .1075 per KWH. That is over a 43% increase over their advertised rate of 0.799. This is a big scam to get you signed up and then they hope you don't notice the higher rate. I signed up with another company (at a years guaranteed price of 0.899 per KWH. Stay away from this scam. The web site shows "current rates" with this scam. Do not be fooled. Your rate will be much higher the second month.

North American Power is a big scam company. I agreed to switch my electric power supplier to help a friend who was selling for this company. In fact, he took me to one of his meetings In which they hold big meetings with prospective new agents in which they close the doors and brainwash people into selling its power supplying to new customers.. They tell you to sign as many people up as you can.

But they don't stop there. Recruit..recruit recruit.. Thankfully, I never sold for them..but I did switch to them to help my friend who was now selling for them. At the time, they never told me My rates would go up. It was a bait and switch. A few months in, we received A huge bill that almost quadrupled and literally made my husband nauseous. When I agreed to switch, I was told the rates were lower than my current supplier. BIG LIE.

I am going to Persue this. I work hard for my money..this company is becoming rich based on lies and a ponzy scheme. NastY. I want to warn others.

Beware.. Do not get involved in switching your power supplier to these shameful scam artists.

Worst thing I did was to listen to North American Power in Norwalk CT. Electricity rate of .0699 $/kwh sounded good, so I signed up on the variable plan. In their introductory letter they quote...""competitive pricing"" and ""peace of mind""...""rate guaranteed to be lower"". To be competitive with pricing I expected their rates not to vary to drastically. Boy....was I in for a surprise. My rate went from .0699 up to .1999 $/kwh within 6 mos. That rate hike tripled my electric bill. They blamed it on demand in winter, yet my rate started going up after the first month which was September. It wasn't even cold yet.

Because I was on the budget plan with CL&P my bill was not going up but I was accumulated a huge deficit which I didn't find out about still April 2014 (8 mos later). So now CL&P has increased my monthly budget payment from $377/mo to $582/mo. Any ethical company would have notified their customer of such a drastic rate increase. Instead NAP never contacted me in anyway to alert me of what was pending.

I will blame part of this on CL&P for creating such a difficult electric bill to read. My bill always showed just paying the $377/mo, but no where did it HIGHLIGHT the fact I was in arrears and accumulating a deficit each month that grew to over $2,000.

Be careful dealing with any of these alternative electicity supplier. They don't care about their customer just their money.

I beleive North American Power is a MLM (Multi Level Marketing) scheme, so that should tell you what they are focus on....getting RICH at your expense.
