I am in the process of reloading all my software on my PC after the old hard drive failed. I have had a subscription with Norton for years, so I tried to log into my account to download my virus protection.
In addition to my email address and password, they now want me to provide two addiktional means of contacting me. Not sure why, but they have three options: Voice mail, text messaging, and some sort of app that requires tokens. That third option is way beyond my comprehension but their site says you have to have the app and tokens before you select that option.
This left my only options as text messaging and voice mail. I selected the text messaging and entered my phone number. Within moments I received their text message of six digits. Then it asked my for a voice mail number. I put in the same number as that is the one and only telephone number that one may call and speak to me. They rejected that number because it was the same as my text number.
So then I tried putting in my wife's cell phone number. She was at work at the time and is not allowed to answer her phone but I expected Norton to leave a message. I was able to send her a text message. Instead of leaving a voice mail, Norton hung up when there was no answer.
As far as I know, Norton has no means of verifying that either of these phone numbers are mine and no way of verifying that my Gmail account is associated with these phone numbers. This is merely a meaningless exercise in trying to protect an account with useless roadblocks. A hacker would just put in his stolen cell phone numbers while legitimate customers are kept out because Norton wrongly assumes that all of us have multiple phone numbers.
I can guarantee Norton that had they had this system in place the last time I was on their site I would not have renewed my subscription to their services.
