Paladin Investigations Reviews

  • Jul 28, 2014

On November 14, 2013, I rejected John F. Brewington’s demand for Xcentric Ventures, LLC or Ed Magedson to pay Brewington $100,000.00 for Brewington’s silence. Brewington offered to stop investigating and writing about the Ripoff Report and RipoffReport.com’s founder Ed Magedson, for $100,000.00. Brewington claimed to have damaging information to embarrass Magedson beyond what Brewington had already published.

Recently, this incident was investigated by the police, and as part of that investigation, I approached Brewington and offered to pay his demand. Brewington recanted his earlier proposal and tried to claim it was a misunderstanding. What is Brewington up to? Read more here.

The Extortion Demand

At a November 14, 2013 meeting at Casey Moore’s Oyster House in Tempe Arizona, John F. Brewington, aka Paladin PI, told me that he intended to continue to market and sell allegedly negative information about Magedson and Ripoffreport.com to hostile parties, unless Ripoff Report paid him $100,000.00 for all the copyrights and publishing rights for any work that Brewington would ever produce on the topics. I immediately rejected the extortionate request as something that was never going to happen. Brewington became visibly upset and left the meeting in a huff.

Brewington has been claiming for years to have damaging information about Magedson, but so far there is nothing to back that up. I invited Brewington to meet and discuss the possibility that he could stop harassing Magedson, and stop attempting to interfere in the business of Ripoffreport.com. I extended the invitation through Rose Law Group attorney, Chris Ingle, who suggested the time and place for the meeting.

Chris Ingle also attended the November 14th meeting, although he stated that he was not representing Brewington, and did not support or participate in Brewington’s demand for $100,000.00. Ingle said that he was only trying to help Brewington move past his hostility against Magedson and RipoffReport.com. In spite of that, Brewington proved his greedy desire to profit from causing harm to the popular and helpful consumer protection website and refused to move past his hostile scheme.

At the Oyster House meeting, I suggested that Brewington should turn his efforts to real investigations that would do real public service. I suggested that Brewington could use the ripoffreport.com website as a resource to find real problems and help people find real solutions. Brewington asserted that if the Ripoff Report would not pay him $100,000.00, he would rather continue to look for negative information about Ripoffreport.com and personal scandals about Magedson, and attempt to sell information to people who were hostile to the Ripoff Report.

Was I crazy to think Brewington could turn over a new leaf? As it turns out, YES. With Brewington’s longstanding hostility to Ripoff Report and Magedson, and his reprehensible methods, what made me think that Brewington might be willing to turn away from his scheming and obsession? Well, I saw a few indications that Brewington wanted to turn to helpful work rather than hostile schemes. For example, Brewington claims to have a passion for recovering lost children, and Brewington repeatedly stated that he abandoned a successful job as a debt collector (with an income in low six figures) to become a crusading private investigator – allegedly because he wanted to help people. And, Brewington went to extremes to pattern himself after a T.V. cowboy who was, more or less, a good guy.

Savior Complex – A Desire To Become A Hero Or Savior

Brewington’s behavior in imitating a T.V. cowboy was so direct that it suggested that Brewington might have a savior complex, a desire to become a hero or savior. As private investigator, Brewington openly styled himself after the 1957 TV serial “Have Gun Will Travel.” This is a cowboy show in which Richard Boone played a vigilante cowboy who wears black, uses a chess knight as his logo, talks in riddles and ambiguities to trick bad-guys, carries a customized Colt six-gun, helps damsels in distress, and calls himself “Paladin.” Brewington calls his investigation business “Paladin Investigations.” Brewington has called himself “Paladin” as an alias in some internet communications. He uses a chess knight as a logo. Brewington wears black, and drives a black Corvette. Brewington sometimes speaks in odd, indirect allusions and suggestive ambiguities, imitating the style of dialog for Richard Boone’s TV cowboy character. I do not know whether Brewington carries a gun, although Brewington’s past felony conviction would make that illegal (unless he has had that right restored). And, at times, Brewington tells people that he wants to help them out of distress. This and other information seemed to suggest some possibility that Brewington could choose to actually help people rather than hurt Magedson and the Ripoff Report.

And so I called for a meeting and asked Brewington to consider refocusing his efforts on helping people instead of on hurting Magedson and Ripoff Report. I would not have been shocked if Brewington had refused. I would not have been surprised to find that hurting Ripoff Report and Magedson had become more important to Brewington’s character and ego than his ability to do good.

What surprised me was that Brewington made it perfectly clear that he wanted money, either through his extortionate request for $100,000.00, or by taking money from people looking for any kind of negative information or scandal about the Ripoff Report and Ed Magedson. That attitude certainly flies in the face of the idea that Brewington wants to help people. Instead of doing helpful investigation, Brewington wants to sell lies and scandal and negative information. Brewington wants to continue in the same negative direction that he started when it comes to Ripoff Report.

HOW THE MEETING AT CASEY MOORE’S OYSTER HOUSE CAME ABOUT

During the course of the legal battles between Brewington and Ripoff Report I had often lamented at how much time and energy Brewington seemed to waste on attempting to make Magedson’s life more difficult. It seems like such a waste. During one of those legal matters, Brewington suggested a meeting with me, who was representing Ripoff Report in the case. The purpose of a meeting was to discuss a permanent resolution to the matters between Brewington and Ripoff Report. I attempted to set a meeting at that time, but Brewington backed out of it.

After defeating Brewington in our most recent court battle, and while there was no pending lawsuits between the parties, I spoke to Attorney Chris Ingle to request a meeting with Brewington. The purpose was to discuss how Ripoff Report might help Brewington to use his investigator’s license to help people. I also wanted to know what Brewington had in mind when he had first suggested a meeting.

This resulted in the meeting at Casey Moore’s Oyster House, and Brewington’s extortionate demand for $100,000.00 to stop scraping for scandal and publishing negative things about Ripoff Report and Magedson.

My recent experience taught me that Brewington is not motivated to help people, he is not even motivated by his hatred of Ed Magedson and Ripoff Report. This is all just a business proposition to him.
