I enterd into a settlement for an account with them in Sept of 2014. They had automatic withdrawls comming out of my bank account for six months. I disputed still oweing them money on my credit report and they sent me the bill as if I had never paid it.

When I called apparently they cant just look up the fact that the had six months worht of payments I have to file a disput and show proof that I have paid the account as agreed. Just one more lesson in keeping good records.

They call to scare you and leave nasty voicemails. One lady called and left a voicemail claiming to be a process server, but when she said the county she worked for I knew it was bs because louisiana doesnt have counties we have parishes. How can you be a process server and not even know thay you work for a parish not a county. Funny thing is the debt they claim i have is with capital one and has been paid off for over a year through capital one. I even have a new checking account with capital one. I have 15 different numbers blocked that they call from. They are unprofessional and i had one tell me that he was sending the police. i told him that ill be out front of my house waiting. needless to say, the police never showed up.

I got a letter from an attorney claiming to represent Capitol One. He threatened me with all kinds of legal action after demanding $300.00 to settle an account. Funny thing is this. I had never heard of Capitol One and never had an account with them. The lawyer was claiming I got a Capitol One credit card in 2005. Truth is, I actually had moved to another country in 2003. So I thought I would respond anyway just to see what all the fuss was about. In writing, I asked the lawyer to provide me with a photocopy of the actual credit card application showing the date it was opened, the signature, social security number and proof of all items purchased with it. His response was....none. A few years later I received a letter from a different attorney claiming the account had been sold on to him & he was now dealing with it. I heard nothing else for several years.

i continued to live in another country until a few years ago when I moved back to the U. S. They are now sending me letters and are claiming I owe $2,000....a big jump from the $300.00 they first said I owed. The attorney has handed this over to Portfolio Recovery Associates, LLC. Dealing with them will got you nowhere. All they say is "You owe a debt; how are you going to pay it." They refuse to tell you what the debt is for, when and where it was opened...nothing. I think this company is simply trying to scare people into paying money for something they don't owe. There are time limitations on their ability to collect if you do owe a debt, but they refuse to honor them...they perfer the scare tactics. I hope people will be wise and demand proof from this company that the debt is yours. Hopefully the government and the IRS will take a close look at this "company" and its practices.

I have contacted this company on many occasions inquiring about my debt. When I finally get routed to a person, they are not only rude but do not provide either over the phone or in writing any specific information on the debt, in my case their was a garnishment, but the original amount was paid off and the law firm continues to garnish money and they will not disclose to me what this money is for. This is a rip-off by a legal firm.

Beware of Portfilio Recovery. Portfolio Recoery supposedly bought one of my old credit accounts in 2009. They then came after me with phone calls, notes on my door, and calls to my neighbors about my debt. I hired an attorney. Portfolio then refused to give out their contact information to my attorney to confirm that I really owed them anything. Portfolio has a long history of trying to claim money they really don't have a right to. They continued to harass me, and my attorney warned them they would be sued. Portfolio then took me to court twice, and found out I am judgment proof. My income is exempt. That didn't stop them. They dragged me into court twice to find out they can't touch my money. They then scheduled a third hearing, and didn't tell me. i missed it, and the judge ruled me in "default" which means Portfolio could then come after me for everything i own. Think about that! By law, in my state at least, if you don't show up in court when a collection agency calls you in, the judge can issue a default judgment, and it's open season on you and your family! Yes, on you and your family. You and your family! The judges have allowed collection agencies to come after not just your wages, not just your car, but all you personal belongings, any savings, any retirement plans, and many other things where they think they can find money. Your spouse and kids are part of this!!!! Think about this! And, in my state, they can keep hovering around you for 20 years. A banktuptcy lasts 10 years tops. They can put a lien on just about anything you own for 20 years. They can come and demand a list of your assets all during that time until they get what they want.
