Let me preface by saying we went here last year Halloween 2013 and did not have any problems despite noticing the vast majority staff being as cordial as a rabid junk yard dog with a thorn stuck in his foot and every guest being treated pretty poorly and harshly like we were burdens. $75.00 a pop burdens, you think they could at least be courteous. We had read a lot of the many negative reviews around the internet but decided to chance it. We did not meet the owner then nor did we this time. This year its a different story....
We were supposed to be there by 8:30 to start the hunt. We poped a flat close by as most of the roads have no street lights and resemble the face of the lunar surface huge potholes. Thankfully I had a can of fix a flat and an air pump. I tried calling the number about 5 times to let them know we had got a flat and would be a bit late but you will never get a human to pick up, just an automated message.
We knocked at the door and were greeted by 2 men (we did not get names) one larger gentlemen wearing a brown cloak and one gentlemen (and I use that term loosely for him) wearing a puffy white shirt and top hat. I explained the situation that we had a flat. He asked us to show IDs and Paypal receipts which we did. He said OK let me go talk to the owner (you) and make sure everything is OK and well be right back, literally closed the door and came back 10 seconds later doubt he had time to take 3 steps let alone talk to anyone. He came back out and said its ok that your late we understand. He got up d directly in my face at this point. Then he barked have you been smoking marijuana? At first Shocked and thinking it was a joke, laughed and answered no absolutely not, as we hadn't. I'm in my final year of law school and actually volunteer as a advocate for drug addicted youths. My girlfriend is in the medical field so needless to say WE DON'T USE any form of drugs AT ALL and are tested regularly for our jobs. We are well kept easygoing friendly always carry ourselves in a professional manner and don't look like to type to partake in illegal activity's or drug use, if there is such a stereotypical "look"
He seemed to become agitated and aggressive when I told him this, taking anm even more aggresive posture at times balling his fists. Yelling at me like a bully in high school. I felt threatened and very confused, waiting at anytime for then to burst out laughing and say we got you were just kidding come in! He refused to state weather he thought we were both under the influence or just me or who he thought he "smelled" marijuana from. He added ive been a bouncer and security guard for years I know my stuff! I don't think that line of works anything to really brag about (see bullies never prosper and obviously you aren't doing a very good job as your dead wrong). I said well i'm sorry you think you smell that, perhaps its my strawberry flavored e cigarette your smelling or my girlfriend had just finished a cigarette minutes prior to pulling up? He said "it may be... but have you been drinking"?, again we answered NO absolutely not, in disbelief at his aggressive inquisition as we hadn't. Were professionals in our mid 30s and just drove an hour in the pouring rain. I said other then what you say you smell do our eyes appear glazed/red are we wobbling slurring speech or any other indication that we were under the influence of a drug or alcohol he said no. I asked the other man if he smelled anything and he said "I cant smell I have a cold". I asked if there was someone else impartial that could "smell" us that we could see, he said no.
He then said "even if its not marijuana, I'm saying your lying and are under the influence of "some type of substance" and if I say your high your high. So if he agreed what he thought he initially smelled may have been mistaken a cigarette or e cig and we showed no other signs of intoxication he could just say I think you under the influence of a substance when he had no proof or reasonable suspicion? The man in the brown cloak chimed then chimed in "if you bring drugs in here we will follow you and kick you out at any time, we said thats fine we dont do drugs nor have drugs. I said you can search me search my car call etc. Heck call the local police and have them do a field sobriety test and search, ill even call them myself he said no (I mean if you suspect someone of being high drunk or having drugs on them wouldn't it be the most responsible thing to do?). Giving him EVERY opportunity to prove our Innocence. What happened was hyperbole and hucksterism not to mention slander and defamation of character. I asked is it because were late you can just tell us that he replied "No" "We have let late people in, that's not the issue". Again we are both in our 30s and professionals not young punk kids or sketchy characters. The whole situation seemed surreal.
Since we were going ghost hunting I had my pen pocket camera running the moment we exited the car so all of this malarkey was RECORDED on video and audio in perpetuity. Including the part where he concluded the smell may not be marijuana and we didn't appear under the influence but just had a "hunch" because he thought he smelled marijuana that we were high on "something" thus rendering his argument TOTALLY invalid. We were asked to leave and in shock and utter disbelief we did immediately. Again this is beyond ridiculous and should have never happened, i'm sorry to say but the man seemed to be on a power trip, unwarrantedly aggressive, discourteous, and spoiling for conflict. I asked if I could speak with the owner, who he claimed he just spoke to and he replied no that she cant be bothered with this. This is NO way to treat customers or anyone for that matter.We were looking forward to this for weeks not to mention spent a good amount of hard earned money $75.00 each a tank gas and 2 hours drive time, to have our night ruined by this man over nonsense.
I understand the need to have an anti drug and alcohol policy but should be enforced with caution care and only if you have proof. Not because someone thinks you may be under the influence despite admitting having no proof or reasonable suspicion. It felt like some type of Orwellian paranoid hostile 1984 Nazi inquisition. So I did a little search when we got home the owner and her callous predatory staff are all over the net with horrible reviews, of the exact same or similar treatment and skulduggery. Its a scam to make money, I think once they get enough people in they will find a reason to turn you away with your hard earned money in thier pockets.
In fact digging on the internet in 2014 the owner Sharon Coyle and Her husband Brad Polle. Had a meeting with the town of Bethany officals over trying to obtain a permit for concerts at the Rolling Hills Aslyum and were denied. Once they were denied they and I quote DIRECTLY from offical town record.
"Both Mr. Polle and Ms. Coyle opposed this determination and became hostile and abusive to the Town Board and the Town Attorney during the meeting. After using foul language, Mr. Polle was ejected from the meeting. Ms. Coyle stayed and continued to strongly disagree with the board and the attorney."
"It was stated by Mr. Polle prior to his ejection that illegal concerts would be held on the property. "

So if they have the gall and lack of couth/ethics to become hostile and aggressive verbally assault town officials including attorneys and judges with foul language to the point they had to be forcefully ejected from the meeting and state they were going to continue "illegal" concerts despite the town saying they cannot. Just imagine how the treat the average joe customer. Professionalism and courtesy don't seem to be their strong suit.
I see on most sites that a poster by the name of "Cody O, Public Relations Manager" responds to most negative posts making excuses for the owners and staffs horrible underhanded and or unscrupulous behavior. I also notice most positive reviews in my opinion seem stereotypical, as if scripted and copy and pasted from review site to review site. Do some research and see it for yourself.....
In conclusion AVOID AT ALL COSTS! Not worth the risk of them berating you accusing you indiscriminately treating you like the dredges of society and a criminal and stealing your money. I strongly suggest anyone who was treated similarly and lost out on money because of the establishments flim flam, dispute the charges via your credit card company and or paypal. Make a report to the BBB, to ripoffreport.com, yelp, trip advisor and any other organisation locally or otherwise that rank or credit businesses. They shouldn't be able to continue to operate like this and treat people in such a course vile manner and potentially take hard earned money from people.
