Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital Reviews

  • May 18, 2015

July 20, 2012, my husband was admitted to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital he was sent to ICU he was unable to move his arms, Legs and his neck became stiff his whole body was in so much pain. He had so many test done they did not know what was wrong with him it took them awhile to call for his medical records from two different hospitals to finally figure out what he had. I was told he had Valley Fever, staph septicemia and altered level of consciousness. The resident doctor told me there are a couple of options I have which to go either Comfort Care, or go Aggerssive care. I never heard of any of this and everything was new to me. Once I was explained about all this I chose to go aggressive care. While he was in ICU, He was seen by One main doctor and four resident doctors, in which the resident doctors basically took over, I rarely seen the main doctor and with the student doctors they would switch off and my husband would be seen by one resident one day and a different one the next. They always said different things nothing ever the same and it was already hard for me to understand.. My husand was being treated with antibotics and given pain medication. Each day my husband was in ICU, the resident doctor would constantly try to change my mind about his care and try to convince me to go Comfort care. I did not agree! I felt that they just wanted him dead.

On the tenth day he was then transferred to a regular room and my husband was improving. My husband could not be touched because of the pain he had all over, but the doctor said he didnt understand why all the pain. Every two hours nurses had to come in and turn him and change him due to him wearing a diaper. There were days he was not even bathed and his diaper would be so soaked he had bed sores which only made him feel worse. Everyday he had a different nurse and they would come in and ask my husband to do something or touch him I would be so upset because my husband could not do anything I asked the nurse if she read his chart, cause if she had before starting her shift she would of known that he cannot be touched because of all the pain. There were times my husband would yell out in pain and the Nurse would either over medicate him or shut his room door, one day they even strapped his arms down. This got me so upset. He was transferred to Cottage Rehab and was there for three days before they sent him back to Cottage hospital for some more test due to pain in his neck. My husband received Physicl therapy and I felt that they were pushing him to fast I felt as if they wanted him out Quickly.

My Husband was becoming more and more lethargic. He was being given to much pain medication and one day he had an allergic reaction sent back to ICU and on the medical report it states "medication Overdose" On Aug. 27, my husband had x-rays done on his chest and it is noted that he had Multifocal Pneumonia, and not treated for this. Doctor came to speak to us about DNR he said he had to put somehing down because now my husband was going to be transferred to a nursing home and he was being medically cleared so he could go. I did not agree and never signed anything and it was stated he is DNR. On Aug. 28 One of the main hospital doctors came into see my husband and said to him "I had to come see this for myself, you are a miarcle the Antibotics cured you now all you have to do is get your strength back which will be a long road to recovery" On Aug 29 we were told that on either the 30th or 31st my husband would be transfered to nursing home and I was told that I would not be able to stay with him only see him on normal visiting hours. I had to go home to get things together for him I would be back as soon as I can. I had no vechile and had to get a ride and I live far.

I left home on Aug.30, I did not want to leave him I didnt trust the nurses or student doctors. I arrive home and this is how it went. Aug. 30, 2012 I called as soon as I arrived home and he was fine no pain and was sleeping. Aug. 31 2012, called at 9am nurse said he was fine, sleeping. 1pm-called again, nurse said he was complaining of stomach pain due to a minor surgery they had to give him to insert feeding tube he is fine. 5:10pm-spoke to nurse said my husband had ct of abdomen and pelvis is back and he is fine and sleeping, and doctor would like to speak with me will call me back. 5:30pm-Doctor calls me back says my husband has fluid on his lungs spoke negative. 6:30pm-I called, doctor gets on phone this is the doctor that wanted me to go comfort care the whole time, she tell's me that his body is deteriorating and might not make it through the night. 9:00pm-I call and spoke to nurse and asked how my husband is doing, nurse says he is fine his difficult breathing has been resolved , no vomiting, no signs of distress no complaints now resting. 9:05pm-doctor calls me and says for me to hurry cause his heart rate is dropping she said she gave him something for pain Dilitued, I was so upset because he is allergic and I asked her why when he had an allergic reaction to it last week she said just to relax him. 11pm-I call to let my husband know that I found a ride and on my way, was put on hold, doctor gets on phone and says there has been a change, I ask what? She says that my husband passed away an hour ago. From what and why I ask she says that his heart rate slowed down and finally stopped, so why wasnt I called why didnt anyone tell me? None of the nurses said anything they said he was fine and sleeping. So what did they do to him? I should of never left!!
