Special Olympics Arizona Reviews

  • Jul 9, 2015

Special Olympics is supposed to be free for the athletes, it always used to be until 4 or 5 years ago, the motto is we are supposed to compete at no cost. The truth is too from the many athletes and coaches from Payson, to Mesa to Glendale that I talk to is that nobody used to have to fundraise at all and everyone got to compete for free for trips to go anywhere in the country or world. Special Olympics Arizona expected us to fundraise $1000 for these world games, but we never were told what we would get out of it or what the costs were even though they claim they did or would lie saying we were told way ahead of time, but the truth is we only were told 3 weeks ago and that we would only stay 3 days because that is how long the board members are going so it makes it seem us athletes aren't important when they make that claim over why we can't stay longer. We had to fundraise to go to USA Games in 2014 also, now I didn't mind that as much because it was worth the cost and experience for that, but I feel I was ripped off for this 2015 world games thing. I talked to people at SOAZ and they weren't willing to refund my money or tell me the true stories on where this money is going to. I know other coaches and athletes not going to give names either because we all just want what is best for everyone and don't want to get in trouble over it who really think it is not fair we are expected to pitch in when half of us don't work, have trouble findng jobs or can't get out enough to know people willing to donate.

I hope these problems can be solved so athletes don't quit or we don't lose coaches or they don't quit having turnovers at the state office because these problems or why people don't stay or why I might end up quitting as an athlete because I want to see everyone happy and want to be happy too. The coaches do a lot of us too so like us they shouldn't have to pay their own way for stuff either and should get treated better also. Now this group I am a part of is only staying July 27th to July 30th in LA, and I am doing a unified half marathon on August 1st and I won't get any support from them with the half marathon they said. I may get accomodations so they can drop me off at the airport to pick up a rental car, but either way I feel I got charged too much or shouldn't be having to pay for all this stuff and neither should anyone else if they don't know where this all is going.
