Tonight I arrived home from work exhausted. Just as I was getting settled on the couch I heard a knock at my door. I looked out my peep hole and saw a young looking girl that looked harmless. She starts by saying her assignment is to meet 10 new people everyday for a class. Then she starts in with her story of how she can earn a free trip to Cancun and that she would get $1000 towards college. She told me she was going to college for journalism. She says that they sell magazine subscriptions. I told her I didn't need any more magazines. She gave me some sob story that I could buy a subscription of children's books that could be donated to a children's hospital.
I tell her if it's for that I'll buy something. . She then starts fumbling with her order forms and asks if I have a pen. I tell her to come in and have a seat. She makes herself at home. She starts playing with my cats and asking questions about them. She is very bubbly and prsonable. She shows me her list of children's books. I pick two and she tells me that they are $49 each. I tell her the most I can do is one. I tell her I have no cash on me and she says she can take a check. She asked me what I did for a living. I told her that I was a social worker for people infected with HIV and AIDS.
She proceeds to tell me that some guy got her pregnant, gave her an STD and then disappeared on her. Why she told me this who knows. I asked her if this was going to be a one time payment or if I would be charged again after this. She says it's a one time thing but that they come around once a year. I give her the check. I already have an uneasy feeling but I was exhausted and she keep right on talking circles around me. She tells me I can cancel at any time but then she won't get the points she needs for her trip. She also tells me that my donation is tax deductible. She also says that they hold your check for 10 days in case you want to cancel. After she leaves I look at the order form.
It's says that if you want to cancel you have to send them a copy of the order form within 3 days. It also says if you cancel your check they charge you a $30 fee. I immediately searched the company on the internet and saw thy it was as I suspected, a scam. I immediately put a stop payment on my check. I told my bank it was a door to door sales scam. I may have to pay a fee to my bank for the stop payment. I may also change my bank account number since it is on the check. You. Their order form says that they will charge you for any cancelled checks but I don't see how they can bill me for it. If I so I'm going to being the matte to our local attorney generals office.
