I rented Unit 705 at the Villas Marlin, Cancun, for one week this past January. Unfortunately, upon arrival, I was told that I was going to be put in Unit 707 as the previous tenant in 705 became ill and the manager did not want to ask them to move. I found out later that the tenant had actually booked the unit from January through the beginning of May but the manager did not want to tell me that. One of the first problems was that I was told the charge was $1400 for the week, $200 per night. That seemed okay but a few days before arrival I received an e-mail from the manager telling me that, ooops, he forgot to charge me tax and cleaning fee. This came to over $350 but I had to pay it as I knew I would not be able to find another place or get my $1400 back. I also had to pay a $500 refundable damage deposit which I have done before at other places and always got back because I don't do any damage while on vacation! The unit advertises itself as a 5-star luxury resort. It lists amenities such as ceiling fans, hair dryers, dishwasher, oven, concierge, exercise room, music library, DVD library, concierge and many other non-existent amenities. While I was not thrilled to see that the unit did NOT have most of the amenities advertised on VRBO, it was too deep in financially to consider moving. At the end, the manager not only tried to refuse to give us back the $500 deposit, but then sent vicious and threatening e-mails making a variety of false accusations in an effort to keep our money. In the 18 years I have been traveling to Mexico, I never experienced anything like this but was not too surprised as upon meeting the manager, Mr. Abner Betech, we had a conversation in which he told us that he had pains and thus took a great amount of oxycontin adn therefore I guessed that it was the drugs talking. I did eventually get back the $500 but only because I had put it on a credit card and was therefore able to dispute it and won. However, I am still upset over this experience and it will be a while before I will ever use VRBO to rent privately again. Just recently I noticed that the manager attacked another previous tenant who wrote a review on VRBO and told everyone that she only wrote it because she is getting incentives from the competition! The response by this manager was belittling and I am still in shock that VRBO has allowed this. Future Cancun renters--Villas Marlin is a pretty nice complex; however, I'd avoid these two units unless you plan on going through the same nightmare as we and other tenants did.
