thredUP Inc. Reviews

I had two separate transactions with ThredUp. The first time I used them, I did not read the instructions as to the specific items they were "seeking" and would pay the most amount of money for. The first time, I requested a bag, put a lot of my daughter's clothes in, and sent it off. Many were new, brand name items, but to be fair, some were not. I was extremely unhappy with my payout, but received a very nice email from the Cheif Marketing Officer, Anthony Marino, asking for feedback regarding my initial transaction. I wrote him back and told him that the model just did not work for me-I did make sense for me to sell the clothes, and receive next to nothing for a payout-that I would simply prefer to donate them. It was a waste of money and time. Although I respected the recycle/reuse business model, it simply was not cost or time effective for me. I had even purchased a dress that came damaged (despite their so called "strict guidelines", that I had to send back and pay for shipping.

With all of the consumer shopping options available today, this site just did not work for me. We exchanged pleasant emails and I wished the him, and the company, the very best.

I decided to clean my closet out this past June, and remembered the pleasant email from Mr. Marino, and thought I would give the company another try. I filled the bag with exactly what they detailed on the website: New, or very gently worn items, clean, and, preferably, with tags. I sent several pairs of Theory trousers, a brand new Tahari sweater (with tags), Michael Kors pants (with tags), a Tibi dress (with tags), Old Navy jeans (with tags), and other items. Of all the items I sent, only two were accepted: The Old Navy jeans, and the Tibi dress. I sent an email to the support desk asking for an explanation as to where all the other items in the bag were (I thought perhaps they were lost, since quite a few had tags!). I also emailed Mr. Marino, The Cheif Marketing Officer, with whom I had exchanged emails. He immediately emailed me back saying he would check into it. I never heard back from him again. After 8 days, I received what seemed like a fairly general response from the help desk stating that they were "unable to accept the remaining items from the bag...and that they are very selective when it comes to suits (which I did not send), dress pants, and blazers (also did not send)"...and that "while the items were in great condition, they did not meet our style requirements". The stated that since I did not pre-pay for the unaccepted items to be returned to me (cost is about $13 for this service-and since I was sending sought after, new items, I did not think this was necessary). They stated that they had been donated.

I forwarded this response, as well as a photo of the new Tahari sweater that I had sent, to Mr. Marino, the Chief Marketing Officer. I asked for an explanation as to how Old Navy Jeans could meet their style requirements, while the Tahari sweater and Michael Kors pants (both of which the website states are "sought after" brands), somehow failed to meet their style requirements. I paid $130 for the sweater, which was originally a $250 sweater. The sweater, along with many other items, "vanished", stating they were "donated". WHo gets the tax deduction for these donations? The company? They do not even issue a tax credit to the consumer.

To date, I have never heard back from Mr. Marino, or any officer of the company regarding this transaction, or their questionable, seemingly fraudulent policies. After having two failed transactions with this company, I did research ThredUp online-they have hundreds of complaints filed against them, not only with The Better Business Bureau, but with sites such as this one, sitejabber.com, and resellerratings.com. My one biggest regret is that I did not do the online research prior to being defrauded by ThredUp. There are hundreds upon hundreds of angry, victimized, and cheated consumers, like myself, across the country. Their lack of response only added insult to injury. Not one Officer cared enough to even email me back.

I have filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau, and will continue to reach out to as many media outlets and online sites as I possibly can to warn people to use alternative services, or local stores, to sell their clothes. This business is a complete and total scam. They misrepresent what the company purchases, as well as their policies. I would rather donate all of my clothes than ever help them deceive one more consumer. When I think of how many reviews I read that echo the same sentiment and experience I had, it makes me so angry...and those are only the people who cared enough to write an online review! I imagine that there are thousands more.

This is the single worst business that I have ever engaged with. Their business, their policies, their lack of communication and response are all duplicitous and dishonest. The Officers all have their photos up with their bios listing their Ivy League educations and degrees, so, naturally, we all trust them. But make no mistake-and be warned- if you send them your clothes, you WILL be cheated, defrauded, and victimized. Shame on ThredUp. I sincerely hope that they are investigated and shut down so that they cannot continue their underhanded business practices.
