Rented a vehicle from these guys at Try 1 Car rental, originally for a week long rental. Then made arrangements to keep the car for extended period of time.
When I recieved the car, it had no key fob (no means of opening the door to the vehicle without setting off alarm). This was never remedied throughout the rental either. The location of Try 1 Car Rental was suspect at best. Located in an industrial plaza near what looked like a "chop shop" garage, and surrounded by "Massage palours" and "Spas" (the unreputable types!!)
Upon making arrangements to keep the car, each time I was required to make a deposit to a TD bank account directly in the the name of "Layton Samuels". This was done without fail, in the amounts that were told to us.
After the third week, we discussed the possibility of extending the rental for a month and possibly a second month. At this point they tried to increase the agreed upon rate. Even went so far as to change the amount requested 3 times within three days! They claimed that the rate changes were due to "miscalculations" on their part. They called each day with a different number, even more than doubling the requested amount at one point.
When I questioned their practises, they informed me that they could "get a better rate off another person", meaning they could charge more and that it was better for them to rent to someone else whom they could charge (due to it being the holiday season) more even though I had been a good paying customer for almost a month.
A "month" by the way, according to their calculations, is 28 calendar days (rented vehicle from Try 1 Car Rental on 28th and was required to return on 26th of next month...even though it was over November/ December time period and a month isn't 28 days.
After paying $490 in the last week, far above the originally quoted amount, they called on Christmas Eve at 5pm requesting additional funds to keep the car until Friday (boxing day) as originally agreed upon. I was informed that if I didn't pay an additional $250 by noon on Christmas day (they have $500 of mine on deposit by the way) they would "shut the car off" as we would be in breach of contract (though I had paid all the required amounts and had receipts for it). This was doubley impressive as banks are not open on Christmas eve at 5pm nor are they open on Christmas Day!
I repeatedly asked to speak with owner or manager named Patrick, left my number numerous times with no call back and he mysteriously "stepped out" anytime I was to call their location.
No explanation offered for any of the questions I had about the rates changes, professionalism or the fact that he (Patrick) would never return any calls. Patrick would only make demands via having an employee call on his behalf.
Try 1 Car rental is an absolute rip off! I would strongly recommend going anyplace else!
